Root OTA Updating

GStarPaw

Newbie
Hi,

I recently decided to flash my DHD with the HTC version of 2.3.3...
This was done using an RUU on an Orange branded handset.
Just wanted a HTC ROM as opposed to an Orange ROM.

Anyway, my question is... Will any future updates come directly from HTC now rather than Orange?
I haven't yet been notified of the latest 2.3.5 update... and when I manually check for available updates, the response is nil. Is this a concern at the moment?

If you used the Goldcard, I suspect your handset still thinks it's Orange which is why it's not updating because it's looking for the Orange software.

Download CID Getter, it will let you know what your handsets Carrier ID is your CID HTC0001 or Orange001. Those might not be exactly right, I can't remember what the exact correct CIDs are sorry.

You've 4 options:

1. You can downgrade to temproot, get yourself Super CID unroot, then check for the update.

2. You can run the Ace Hack Kit giving yourself Super CID, but installing clockwork in the process meaning your handset won't be able to install an OTA Update, to be in a position to install the update, you'd need to run another RUU to give yourself HTC's recovery image (but you're rooted and have the option of custom ROMs anyway).

3. Run the Hack Kit and install a custom ROM

4. You can run the Sense 3.0 RUU, but you'd be in the same position again when/if HTC release another OTA update.

If it was me, I'd go for Option 3, but it's obviously up to you. Options 1,2 & 4 mean you lose data. If you're worried about warranty, it's void at the moment anyway.

Let me know what you want to go for and I'll get some info together to point you in the right direction. :)

Thanks for the information.

What is involved in step 1, I'm guessing this isn't a permanent fix with a name like temproot?

I still want to be able to receive OTA updates, but from HTC rather than Orange.

Is there a way to just change the CID to allow me to do this or isn't it as simple as that?

I'm not bothered about losing data.

Temproot is so that you can change the CID (Carrier ID) from an Orange one to an HTC one.

You would be able to receive OTA updates (from HTC, not Orange) :)

The only way to change the CID would be to do as El Presidente has said and downgrade, temp root, change CID and unroot.

Hi chaps,

Thanks for the advice!! You were a great help!!

I was all set to go for it this weekend but dropped my phone on Friday evening.
A new handset has been sent out... (thank god for insurance) but... the new handset has arrived with Orange's version of 2.3.5 (Software number 3.13.61.5) complete with all of their crap and very poorly designed icons.

I want to replace this software with HTC's version of 2.3.5... Do the same principles apply that you mentioned above?

Many thanks.

Gav

The stuff I linked too wouldn't work with that software version, sorry.

You could use a gold card again, run an RUU with the latest software version? You'd be in the same position again, when HTC update to ICS, you probably wouldn't get the update.

You could also use the goldcard and run the 1.32.405.6 RUU, root using the visionary I linked to above, change your CID, unroot, then check for an OTA update.

I didn't think it would, just thought I should double check first.

I did try and run the 'RUU_Ace_Sense30_S_HTC_WWE_3.12.405.1_Radio_12.65.60.29_26.14.04.28_M_release_225512_signed' RUU yesterday with a goldcard but got an Error [140] : BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR.

I'm assuming that's because Orange's version of the software is a higher version than the HTC version?

Yeah, that makes sense, I do recall something about you not being able to run an RUU for a software version lower than the one you currently had.

At the moment, it looks as though your only option is the Ace Hack Kit/a custom ROM or isn't that an option?

I did read somewhere that the phone could be downgraded by putting the ROM file on to the SD Card and booting the phone with the volume button held down.

Is this true or just a myth? Will I have the same problem with Bootloader versions?

It can, yeah but it only works with certain software versions to my knowledge. I know the hack kit does it, but I'm not sure how it forces the the phone to accept the downgrade.

I can't remember where I saw it now, but from what I remember... It was something like running the appropriate RUU and recovering the ROM file from the Windows Temp folder.

Then placing the ROM file on to the SD card, rebooting the handset with the volume button held down.
Obviously, with a goldcard inserted.

When you say certain software versions... Do you mean software versions installed on the handset or RUU versions?

It was Xyros post here. You can give it a whirl by all means, but as far as I'm aware, you need to do some additional jiggery pokery to get it to accept the downgraded software version.

Yeah sorry, the downgrade by PD98IMG.zip method only works when downgrading to 1.32 from 1.72, 2.x etc. As far as I'm aware, there isn't a manual downgrade method for 3.x software versions yet as the Hack Kit dose everything for you.

Does that all make sense? It does in my head, but I can understand it might not to someone who's not au fait with the processes. :o

No, that makes perfect sense. :)

I'll give it a go.

Do you know much about HTC's Bootloader Unlock Tool?
I haven't done a lot of research on it in all fairness.
I wasn't sure if it would get me any closer to where I'm going with this downgrading malarkey?

Nothing unfortunately, it came about after I rooted so I didn't really pay it much attention.

I may well know a man though if you'd like me to ask him to give you the run down?

Just a random question...

Am I right in saying that the latest HTC RUU for this handset is 3.12.405.1?

Or is there a later version beginning with 3.13?

There is no later version than 3.12 as far as I'm aware and at he moment it would be network branded so you'd be in the same position as you would be now.

Re the htcdev thing, apparently unlocking the bootloader wouldn't help unfortunately. As it stands, I think your easiest route is the Hack Kit.
