Help "Other" section

Lurker
I am new to Android. So pardon my ignorance. This is my first phone and I have had it for just two days. I'm switching over from having used an iPhone for the past 6 or 7 years. So far, I don't regret the decision. I'm having a blast with this phone.

My question, however, is this. Is it normal to have this much space (over 6 gigs) taken up in the other section with just two days out of the box? What exactly is in other?

Hi Yes thats normal . You have the operating system all your music photos ETC. You can put your music and photos on SD card to lower the internal useage. That is normal that you have posted

Welcome to the forums (and more importantly, Android!), rebelde80!
While I don't own an M8 or any past HTC devices, my guess is a majority of "Other" is simply the OS. With some heavily skinned devices (mainly HTC and Samsung), the OS can consume a large part of the internal storage.
The HTC One M7's OS took up ~6Gb of storage, so this wouldn't surprise me. Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot you can do about it.

It is normal, but probably not quite right to say the OS takes that much space. Anything that doesn't fit into those small number of categories gets counted as "other", including everything that isn't part of the "sdcard" partition whether the space is used or not. So that "other" includes the whole of the cache partition, as well as the system/firmware partitions, anything in the secure storage area, any app data, etc.

The old binary/decimal unit confusion adds to this. A "32GB" device really has 29.7GB of space in binary units. So as my M7 has a 25.5GB "internal storage" partition, the rest is really 4GB, not the 6GB you get if you subtract this from 32.

In principle HTC could have made more space available, as they've been very cautious about allowing space for future upgrades. On the M7 the ROM actually only uses about half of the system partition, so there's almost a GB unused, which is a pretty generous margin.

And to think I ran my Desire with a ROM that fitted into a 60MB system partition ;)
