Root Overclocking kill battery life?

Still a semi-noob here...does overclocking your droid x have a significant impact on battery life?

Yes and No! it can use more and save battery.
You can OC(overclock) or UC(underclock), setting the Vsel (voltage selector) enables you to send the amount of voltage to your processor that you specify you can also set to the speed of your processor that you specify. Use caution when doing so, you can roast your processor. stick to the presets until you know what you are doing.

Overclocking is a little more complicated than a lot of people think.

Faster clock speeds often require increased voltage to achieve them. Increased voltage typically shortens component life.

In terms of battery, there are points of efficiency. You want to be crunching the most numbers per chunk of battery life - that's the most efficient thing. So when you overclock, you might end up SAVING battery life, because you are running more voltage so the battery drains faster, but it takes less time to complete tasks on your phone, so the processor isn't running as much. Or, you could end up losing battery life, because the increase in speed isn't outweighed by the increased drain on the battery.

Most people overclock because they like a faster phone, and don't think about the efficiency piece. Some people end up with better battery life, some people end up with worse battery life... but I'm not sure many people really do testing to find out where the most efficient point is.

i've tested different settings mainly for stability and noticable heat generation. I'm set at 1.2 lv and get a much better battery life and noticably more speed out of my processor. i'm not willing to go up to 1.4 or more b/c i'm too afraid i'll fry my board, plus at 1.3 my phone got pretty unstable. i also don't want to increase the voltage to go up that high cuz it destroys my battery. like binary said, you have to cdheck out different settings to see what works best on your phone. eventhough we all have the same device, they are all running under different conditions, so my settings won't necessarily work for you and vice versa.

binary visions Oh man was I tired last night, I skipped the general ?ion in that post "does it use more batter". lol

I was overclocked at 1.2ghz for awhile and 1.15 for even longer but realized i wasn't noticing any speed increases. I mean my quadrant scores were always higher but in everyday life didn't notice anything. I actually am much happy after I went back to 1ghz and just brought my VSEL numbers way down. I'm saving tons of battery life now and its just as fast.
