Overused Words

'Incredible'. I am so sick of hearing that word, particularly in the media. This morning was the last straw, I was watching a morning show and the host, talking about some fluff piece that was coming up, said "we'll have that story incredibly soon."

So he meant that it was literally almost impossible to believe how soon they would broadcast the article? That's madness, seems it's become the word to describe anything that's slightly out of the ordinary. 'Amazing' isn't far behind.

I get particularly irritated by the use of such words in the media because people in that position should have a better grasp of the English language.

While I'm ranting, the 'stomach' is an internal organ, not the outside bit on the front between your ribcage and pelvis. That's your belly. Misuse of that word really started to bother me in one of those ridiculous often repeated abdominal fitness machine ads when the screeching woman excitedly declared, "I don't even have a stomach anymore!".

When I hear someone mention the size of a pregnant woman's stomach, I cringe.

Oh and of course 'nucular'....grrrrrr!

I feel a bit better now.

@HarryC, if you haven't already, please have a look at our grammar nazi thread. I believe you'll feel right at home there. :D

I'm right there with you on the examples you posted. And oh so many more!

The pregnant woman/stomach thing really gets to me. I've seen people on TV talking about how they told their child, "you grew in Mommy's stomach" or "your little brother is in my stomach right now." Really? That's quite a feat!

I saw a t-shirt once that suits this discussion.

The misuse of literally drives me figuratively insane

Another word that I feel has become overused is viral. I mean really, can't we just say that it's widely popular and move on?
