Root PagePlus, Rooted DX still on 4.5.605

Hi all

Can my phone be brought into 2014? and usefulness again?

Back in 2011 I "froze" my phone at Gingerbread 2.3.3 by changing a "BlurUpdater.apk" to "BlurUpdater.bak" because I didn't want to loose root access. Since then, I haven't messed with it due to lack of time (eh, life happens).

However, over the past few months it's gotten very unstable (poss in part due to being severly outdated software-wise at least), to the point where when I press send to make a call, it can take a few minutes to initiate the call (unless the phone was freshly rebooted). Other things, like writing any new files to the SD card (32GB) will cause the phone in short order to spontaneously reboot- and come up unstable (taking multiple reboots for it to "settle" down). There's even more, so I can no longer put this off.

tldr;
I would like to completely re-format my GB2.3.3 DroidX and start from scratch getting the most current f/w update which is rootable and start clean (I've never wiped this phone even once so I don't know any of the procedures).

Are there any pitfalls to this action and any chance of my phone possibly not working as a phone on PagePlus after doing this?

What are my options?

Some links would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

First you should backup anything you want to keep
Contacts should be synced with your google account but should be verified be logging in at contacts.google.com
more here Backing up contacts
Browser bookmarks maybe synced google, but can also be backed up with a bookmark backup app
app data can be backed up with several different apps, I use Titanium backup with pro key
Texts and call logs can also be backed up, several different apps that can do that in the google playstore

Several things can be done to get the DX running better, but it is 4 years old.
Factory reset, should be done at least once a year.
If your battery is more than 2 years old it maybe faulty
A bad wall charger can also cause issues.

If you want to update system version easiest is flashing firmware with RSD Lite or ezSBF
newest available flashable stock firmware is 4.5.621/ android 2.3.4, but there is little improvement over 4.5.605
once on 4.5.621, you can manually install update 45.621.10/ android 2.3.4

My suggestion is to backup your data, and install liquid ICS or CM11 over current 4.5.605

Non of these options should have any effect on your page plus service.

First, Thank you very much for responding in an otherwise "dying" sub-forum.

>My suggestion is to backup your data, and install liquid ICS or CM11 over current 4.5.605
A few things here just to be clear.

I assume you mean of course, backup, factory reset, install ICS or CM11. I definitely want to make sure the phone gets "re-formatted" (wiped clean to start, if that is even proper terminology here), because of the instability I've been having..

ICS==Ice Cream Sandwich? Is not that a later OS version than gingerbread? Does not that also by default mean a version >4.5.605?

You recommend staying on 4.5.605 (gingerbread 2.3.3) over upp'ing to 4.5.621 (2.3.4 which BTW is which OS name?)
I am curious as to why. My understanding was there were some radio improvements after 4.5.605 (and I am one of those who also always has the issue with wireless connections dropping (under any type of encryption) ), so anything that could improve that would seem to be a goal for me.

Also, there are some apps (like nzb360) which wont even install (altho that could be outdated play store or other components- I haven't updated anything/apps in at least 1.5 years.)

I replaced my batt 1 yr ago- no prbs there (LG Accessories, amazon- good batt).

Again, thank you for taking the time to reply, it's greatly appreciated!

Lquid ICS and CM11 are custom roms, factory reset is one of the step when installing a rom

Because of the locked bootloader, not all of the stock firmware can be replaced by a custom rom.
often moto firmware is referred by the system version, because the system version is just easier than remembering kernel versions like 2.6.32.9-g1282440 mcbk83@il93lnxdroid08 #1

main reasons not to upgrade was once on 4.5.621, you can not go back, and 4.5.621 was harder to root, but with framaroot app, rooting only takes secs. There are radio changes, that are likely better for most.
Also, there are some apps (like nzb360) which wont even install (altho that could be outdated play store or other components- I haven't updated anything/apps in at least 1.5 years.)
Likely installing a custom rom like Liquid or CM11 will allow those apps to install and work, but you can ask in those roms threads if you want, links in my list under custom roms

A little more in android firmware, there are several partitions: Bootloader, Recovery, Radio, Kernel, System, User Data...
Because of the locked bootloader, DX custom roms can not replace the Bootloader, Recovery, Radio.
To install the custom rom a Hijack is used called a Bootstrap, allowing for a custom recovery where custom roms can be installed.
If you want the radio update flash the 4.5.621 firmware with rsd lite. Using RSD Lite to flash a .SBF to restore (Stock Rom)
Root with Framaroot, install a bootstrap see Install/Use Droid modified X or 3 Bootstrap
then If you want to try Liquid ICS (Android 4.0) watch How to install CM7 Rom on the Droid X steps are the same except don't need the Gapps file.
If you want CM11 (Android 4.4) watch my [Video] Installing CM11 on the Motorola Droid X (MB810)

Thank you so much! I will take the path you detailed in your last paragraph here.

Now I have some reading to do, and some steps to take. No more questions until some progress is made-

TYVM!

Managed to install TiBU and backup all user apps+data, using the Options - Batch selection.

I did manual backups of these:
browser 2.3.3 (BOOKMARKS)
Bookmarks (stock browser)
text messaging 2.3.3
calendar storage 2.3.3
call log
Dialer Storage 2.3.3 (SMS/MMS/APN)

since they weren't done by the Batch. Then I connected the phone to mu pc via USB cable and copied the whole TitaniumBackup folder onto my pc.

I think that's all I need.

I Sent you an additional PM quest.

Thx

ALSO- Before I actually do the wipe/reformat and re-install, I would like to do a full format of my 32GB SDHC card that's in there, after which I will manually copy all my music and stuff back onto the card when the upgrade process is complete.

Is there a particular way to format th SD card for use in the phone? Or can I just connect the card to my PC and full format FAT? I think when I bought it I just put it in the phone and it worked. (or else I formatted on the PC-- I don't recall)

OK

sbf'd to 4.5.621 using rsd lite 6.1.5

Little issue with RSD:
RSD got to 100%, phone properly rebooted up to the lock screen with current time, but then RSD said:
"please manually power up this phone"

I waited 5 minutes- powered cycled the phone (still USB connected to PC)- made no difference to RSD so IO powered OFF phone, disconnected USB cable, closed RSD who warned me of possible "..DAMAGE.." to phone.

I ignored that and all seems fine with the phone.

NOW- I want to use one of the ROMs you suggested to get better performace/less crap on the phone.

Two questions
1) Which of the ROMs you mentioned above:
  • ICS liquid
  • CM7
  • CM11
will give me the best flexibility/performance and tweakability on the phone? (is there a list of ROMs for .621?)

2) Can I first put on 45.621.10 before going to one of the above ROMs to get its' fixes, and where can I find the procedure for installing 45.621.10?
Nevermind this one. I manually issued System Update from settings so it's done.

Thanks again!

Installed CM11, went fine.

Booted to home screen np, then I went into setting and turned on something relating to "search bar" which was off (I had no text entry box on the home screen I thought turning this on would put it there)

Now, all I get, over and over is a dialog:
"Unfortunately, Trebuchet has stopped."

I OK it, but it keeps coming back- I can't do anything. NO icons get drawn on the home screen. I'm stuck.

Reboot doesn't help.

What can I do?

One error during GApps_Minimal install: "E:Unable to recreate and-sec folder." was the first line, but it didn't hold up the install.

Also, instead of using "Droid2RecoveryBootstrap_CWM5.0.2.0.apk", I used "Droid2Bootstrap621MOD.apk" which I got from this post:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25017-ro...-clockworkmod-flashable-updates-by-ky/page-20

**I booted to TWRP and did a wipe (which took several minutes surprisingly to me).
SO, I am back to "good"

BTW: All I did to cause this was from the home screen:
Menu - Homer Screen Settings - Search Panel "toggle on"

which I assumed would put a search dialog bar on my home screen, but this was doom for this build I guess??
