Root Pay for Root

I have tried to use ADB, I don't like the 1-click methods due to loss of data after rooting, and I'd rather just see if there's someone in the Lexington, KY area that I can hire to root my T-Bolt.

It's not that I don't want to do it myself. I've rooted my OG Droid, Droid X, Incredible, my wife's Fascinate, and Incredibles belonging to friends, so I can follow instructions and learn processes, but ADB is throwing me. I'm not a developer or programmer, and would rather leave ADB for those more technical than I.

Is there anyone around here who can knock this out?

Does ADB see your phone? If you type adb devices does your phone show up? If so, it's easy and I can walk you through it. If not, you will need to get the htc sync drivers depending on which platform you are using. You're going to lose data no matter which way you do it.

I forgot about that. I have a Mac and a PC... I installed the HTC Sync drivers on my PC, but forgot to do that on the Mac. (I couldn't get ADB to find my T-Bolt on the PC even with the Sync files, which is why I'm trying it on my Mac).

The PC instructions had a link to the Sync drivers... I'll try looking for the Mac version and get them installed.

Thanks!

If you set your phone up to share your internet connection with your pc it will install the drivers for you. Just remember to edit your path variables and when adb recognizes your phone your good to go! I remember you helping me root my og Droid dj I know you can do this. Have you watched the video I posted on this site? It's a walkthrough video step by step after your device has been recognized.

i used the "easy root" method and it was not so easy ;) basically all it does is save some cutting and pasting,if i had to do it all over again id just do it the adb way. i havent looked much at the "one click" windows app,but saw it does require adb to be setup and configured, wich,IMO is the hardest part of it. once you get adb set up,and drivers installed so your phone is recognized, its fairly easy.

one thing i dint realize at first is that when you set up the paths correctly, you can run commands from any file. at first i was just dumping files i needed to push into the tools directory, wich works fine, but was a big mess of files  to solve that i just created a file in android sdk called "flashables". now i can drop everything into it,and then wipe it clean easily when im done to get ready for the next project. when i start the command window i just type cd c:\android-sdk-windows\flashables to change to it. the file that you run commands from doesnt have to even be in android sdk... it could just be in the root of c,or anywhere.

anyway,i dont know if that helps you or not,but ive played around with adb on my eris and im alot more comfortable with it now. its not nearly as mysterious as it used to be. :) at first i was intimidated enuff i thot i was gonna wait for unrevoked to figure it out,but finally couldnt stand it. if i can do it,you can do it

and when you get it figured out,try virus, its de-sensed and runs pretty smoothly. :)

I had the sdk from my DI but it did recognize my TB. Nonetheless, you need to install the sdk and then the htc drivers. On a PC go to device manager and see if there is a yellow exclamation point by the htc device once you plug it in, you have to have that working before you can adb anything. I also heard it was relatively easy on a Mac but I can't vouch for that. If you can IRC then we can talk there at some point early next week, perhaps Monday morning. There are a lot of folks who will help you on that channel.

Thanks! However, this is what I was trying and I couldn't get ADB to see my T-Bolt. It wasn't finding the files, either, and I followed the steps to a T. I don't know what I did wrong.

I just went through this. If you need help, let me know and I'll hold your hand through this like others did for me.
YOU MUST ROOT...It's awesome.

I needed a bit of help and forget that ridiculous 1 step and 3 step.
It gave me so much trouble.
It's really easy once you understand it. First of all, and I know this is going to sound strange but download adb for dummies. Then I want you to go to youtube and type in thunderbolt root. Watch the 10 minute video and do EXACTLY what he says for step 1 only. Steps 2 through 9 are missing a few things so I'll walk you through that.
Once your rooted...it's all fun from there. Oh.....And there is no charge for help.
These boards are the best.

you know what? i think this link is exactly what you need. it explains things very well.

Welcome to the Darkside...here are your rations...lol

We have better uniforms too! Good to see you over here Keller :)

Haha! Thank you sir! It is great to be over here again with an awesome device made even more awesome!

I'm running Virus ROM Airborne and over-clocked at 1.6 Ghz. Ran as high as 1.8 for a few minutes but locked up and rebooted. 1.7 ran for a bit and got me over 2800 in Quadrant, but 1.6 is very stable and really, just as fast. Stock, I never got more than 1850. Wow!

Still exploring ROMs... not sure I can completely get away from the Sense look in the dialer, etc... without getting a true AOSP ROM like CM7, which is really what I want, but Virus ROM is really pretty clean and themed really well. I can't find anything wrong whatsoever... nothing is broken at all.

That said, I'm glad I did it the long ADB way. I knew why I was doing each step, and it made the process much more educational and interesting. Once I knew where the files needed to be and how to use ADB commands, it was really pretty easy. One just needs to get acclimated to using ABD commands if they've not used them before.
