Root Pc36img?

when i type fastboot oem get_identifier_token it doesn't get a response (just says waiting for a response)

it said boot into fastboot first but fastboot doesn't work (it says no image or missing image)

that is normal. the evo is programmed to search for the PC36IMG file. when it does not find one it will report back that. what you see is called the bootloader. from there select fastboot and you should be fine with getting the htc token from there.

when i select fastboot from the bootloader, i get "no image or missing image"

ok you should only get that when you are in the bootloader. it should scan and then give you the no image or wrong image error and then it should disappear and you will be given a menu options. select fastboot. the menu should change slightly and the first option should change to fastboot usb.

okay, i understand now

fastboot is selected in red, i plug in the usb cable to my computer, hit reboot

however, now i'm still stuck on "waiting for device" from the cmd from the get_identifier_token

when the phone is plugged in does the menu change from fastboot to fastboot usb?

also do you have the fastboot.exe file in your android folder?

it might be your cable then, not completely sure why you are having such an issue witht this. you seemed to be doing everything right. try another cable and see if this is the cause or not.

it looks like the problem is htc sync isn't working correctly. can you link me the "correct" version for evo 4g? wondering if that will fix this

well my conclusion that it might be the cable is because it was working before, so htc sync and the right driver was working as well....and now it is not.....so my guess would have been the cable rather than the drivers.....at least that is my opinion.

okay, i followed the advice in that thread. it looks like i have a clean install of the OS. however, it does not appear i have root. are there further steps beyond that?

well if you are unlocked then that is only that. are you unlocked or s-off? do you have recovery? did you flash the su file? everything will be stock until you flash another rom.
