permanent bloatware removal htc

Hi,

I have just rooted my HTC m8 hoping to remove the unwanted bloatware (facebook/twitter/you tube etc) and used titanium. Imagine my disappointment when everytime I reboot the device they reappear. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Ant

Head over to the all things root guide forum for our phone. Can get there quick by googling HTC one m8 all things root guide. And then look for the vzw perm root and s off link. And I'm guessing you have the Verizon version if not then things will be much easier for you. You will need a PC also. follow the guide step by step and you'll have no problem its pretty easy. Cheers and happy rooting! :) come back if you have any question specific about the process and we'll answer them.

Thanks for that. I'll look at it over the next few days hopefully. I'm in the UK so no Verizon so hopefully it'll be easier. I may well get back to you in a few weeks if I have any problems. Can't believe I spent so long with Apple and ios before finding android.....
Thanks again

Haha yes same here. Since no Verizon you can have your boot loader unlocked by the HTC website. So much easier so yea just check out the other guide for your phone and you'll be all set. Goodluck

The boot loader is already un locked- I did that on HTC website like you said. I take it it's just a case of the perm root and s off from here. Have I understood that correctly?

Hi,
Further to my questions above about my newly rooted htc, my handset is now not installing updates. Is this normal for rooted phones or is it because I still don't have s-off.
Sorry to ask what are probably very basic questions but any help would be greatly appreciated(again)
Thanks

Mhhmm actually never heard of that happening before since only root doesn't touch the phone in that way. Have you tried a reboot or tried reinstalling the app. Sorry for the delay for some reason I wasn't receiving notifications for this app

Yea a lot of time root can stop system updates but they usually only fail when you have a custom recovery installed. Are you on stock or a custom recovery?if your stock you can try the unroot method from supersu then take the ota

Hmmm but sure. I really did just walk through a step by step guide to rooting so I'm not sure how I'd tell if it's stock our custom. I do have the super su app installed if that helps?
I really appreciate all your help on this

The only way you would have a custom recovery like clockworkmod or TWRP is if you flashed it yourself. But I don't think you did

No I don't think I did. So I need to have perm root and s off to be able to remove apps completely and to allow updates I'll need to flash the device. I'm guessing there a forum on this site trusting flashing somewhere?
Cheers

If your boot loader is unlocked go ahead and flash a custom recovery. I use TWRP. From there you can get the super su files and flash them in recovery. And then you'll be rooted.

mustang,

thanks again. im going away on holiday for a couple of weeks and I reckon if I spend any more time on my phone i'll come back divorced....
I'm hoping all the info you've given me over the last few days will sort out all my problems- if I have one or two other queries when I get back is it ok to get in touch again? I promise I wont stalk you.
cheers

Have you thought about flashing a custom ROM?

Might be a bit much considering you are fresh to rooting. But once you have a custom recovery in place you could consider that. The ROMs usually get rid of the bloat or allow you to chose which bloat you would like.

One of the other members suggested that. I haven't got a clue how to do it or really what it means. I'm happy to do the research but any advice is greatly appreciated. The people on this bb have been really helpful

To get perma root is basically the same procedure as flashing a custom ROM but with a few extra steps. You'll install a custom recovery, like TWRP, and you boot into it. From there you flash a zip file, in one case it would be the supersu.zip and the other would be a <insert ROM name>.zip. Its as simple as that.

S-Off seems to be on the more advanced side where if problems do arise could cause much more serious problems. But at the same time gives you far more control over your phone.

Obviously the decision is up to you :thumb:

I've looked at the procedure for installing tarp which looks relatively straightforward. When you say I need to flash 2 zip files, what exactly does that mean, where do I find those files and again, is it fairly easy to find instructions to file on line?
I know these are basic questions and probably a little frustrating....

Dont worry about it, we've all been there :thumb:

The superuser file you can find here: SuperSU Download

Although if you have the Superuser app on your phone and are using Titanium backup then surely that means you already rooted?! Can someone else confirm this?

You may just need a permanent recovery.

For the ROM here are the usual steps i take for flashing:
Download the ROM to your phone (dont unzip)
Backup all USER apps in titanium backup (never system apps (the ones in red))
Boot into recovery
Wipe data
Wipe /system
Wipe cache
Wipe davlik cache
Hit the install zip option
Find the ROM file and flash
Reboot
Go through the setup options as a new phone
Download titanium backup and reload all your apps :thumb:

Always worth reading the flashing options for the ROM as some do the wiping stages for you although its a good habit to get into :thumb:

Ok brilliant. The phone is rooted as I managed to limp through that un assisted:-)
So if I just follow the steps for permanent recovery you mentioned above I should be able to remove bloatware and update ota updates??

Bloat should pretty much be removed. Usually something called an aroma installer will allow you to chose what to install.

Sorry, i forgot to mention you wont get OTA updates but the ROM developers usually release the latest release of the new firmwares within days of the releases so you go through the download and flash procedure as before.

One thing ive not mentioned which i should have done, once you have installed a perma recovery do what is known as a Nandroid. Its a complete backup of your phone if/when the poo hits the fan and is usually a way of saving the phone. This is done from the recovery.

So if I just follow the steps for permanent recovery you mentioned above

Just so you know, the steps ive gone through are only for flashing zip files (ROMs, mods, files, etc). Installing a custom recovery is different and is in the All things root thread :)
