Help Personalized SMS Notifications?

Bob Loblaw1

I'm running stock jellybean and can't figure out how to assign personalized sms notification tones to my contacts. Could somebody help me out with this? Thanks.

And on a different note, how can I text a .wav file? My app (smart voice recorder) gives me the option to share the file but when I choose Handcent, nothing is attached. Really appreciate the help.

I don't know about with the stock messenger. I'm using handcent which is free in the play store. With it, if you access a text thread there is a contact/gear icon in the upper right. If you click on that you get personalization options - one is notification settings. This page like the general notification settings page but the contacts name is at the top. Changes there apply to the contact. Notification sound is an option.

Yeah I use Handcent too. Perfect man thanks. I had seen that before but forgot where to find it. Of course it was right where you would expect it to be :o

Spoke too soon. I changed the notification sound for 1 of my contacts and even clicked "test sound" and it was the right one but when she texts me it's still the default.

edit: interesting. I can change the tone using one of the default tones but I seems like I can't use a custom tone

Strange. I have not tested to that extent... Could it be a file tagging issue of ringtone vs notification - and handcent wanting it to be a notification sound? If you use something like ringpod (free) to create ringtones, even with the same file it has different save distinctions between ringtone and notification. I don't know what it's changing (if anything.) It's a stab in the dark, but it might be worth trying.

Don't know if this works .wav files. I don't have any on my phone. The following seems to work with .mp3. If you know where the file is saved, and have ES File Explorer on your device, then where you'd input the message, tap the little lightening bolt icon to the left. From their choose audio, then choose audio again to pick a file. You should come up with a "complete action using" box. Choose ES File Explorer - navigate to file and select. If you don't get a "complete action using" box then at some point you set a default. If you know what app you set as your default you can go to it in the device settings and clear defaults for that app.

Don't know if you're sending something you recorded earlier - but from the lightening bolt icon->audio in Handcent it looks like you can record audio to send.

PS There's always money in the banana stand.:D

You may find you need to copy the notification file to the Notifications folder before it will work: when I selected an MP3 as a ring tone it wouldn't work until I moved the file to the Ringtones folder.

I'll definitely keep an eye on that, it hadn't occurred to me that it would care about file location.

The only way you can have custom SMS tones for your contacts is using an app' that allows you to do that. The OS itself doesn't have this feature unfortunatly, even though you can set diffrent call tones.

Here's the trick. If you use an app', like Ringo for instance, you have to go into the SMS settings and set the system tones to silent so that you only hear the tones from the app'.
