Root Phandroid App News service

Okay you would think that they would make the Phandroid App as not a memory hog but I guess not. I only use this app for the forums and not for any news or anything else. I noticed that I simply cannot turn off the news service. Today when I checked it was gobbling 20MB of RAM. I'd love to keep the app but does anyone know how to get this news service turned off and keep it off? I've turned off all the notification stuff in settings so far hasn't touched it.
