phone call while navigating??

So, how do you think it works if using the Droid as GPS in the Car Dock, then get a call?? Will there be a single button to tap to answer the phone, put the phone in speaker mode and keep navigating??

That'd be nice to see in a video....
 
Excellent question. I am curious about taking calls when docked in car mode and the multimedia dock as well. I'm sure this is possible, can't see them glossing over this situation.
 
On my CDMA multitasking WinMo, the app kept running. I answered the call, talked, hung up, then returned to the app and it picked up. It may not have navigated while on the phone, but I didn't have to reload everything except twice when the sound quit working completely in VZ Navigator after a call. It was weird:confused:, but only happened the two times.

I'm under the impression that if you are in an Area where you are receiving the EVDO revA signal instead of plain EVDO you CAN actually recieve voice and data. I may be wrong but think i read it somewhere. Would be nice to see a video on how this works!


I googled a little more and it looks like its a CDMA thing that stops the voice and data from exchanging simultaneously. GSM can do it so I guess that would be one thing ATT can do better till LTE rolls out (which will even the score, as far as doing both). Still need a video to show us how the phone transitions back and forth while driving.

I beleive it's technically possible but NOT implemented on verizon (or sprints) network.

I haven't asked in a while but I have a friend who's a mucky muck at alcatel-lucent and sells tower gear to vz. When EVDO-REV.A came out he explained it to me. Rev A is fast enough that they can move the voice to VOIP and then put both the call and 'normal' data over IP. But verizon did not implement that possibility.

So they MIGHT have added it but I suspect not and that rather they are focusing their system upgrades on LTE. They are talking about killing off EVDO in the foreseeable future when LTE is all over, BUT even then they say they will maintain their 1x CDMA network for voice for some time. So for whatever reason they really like 1x for voice. Eventually they say they will move data AND voice to LTE but no time soon.

On many phones today with evdo and 1x indicators you can see the phone switch from EV to 1x when you are browsing and then a voice call comes in. The netwrok puts the EV data connection on standy and then switches to 1x for the call. When the call is over it goes right back to EV and then reactivates the EV session where it left off.

But as Jacqueline wrote- I'd guess the GPS stays active- otherwise there would be no point to E911- they need to get your GPS postion when you are on the phone to 911. So the device probably still navigates BUT if google maps hasn't cached enough map data you might "drive off the map" and you would get the blue dot in the middle of the checkerboard loading data screen that g-maps uses when it needs to load fresh data.
 
Thanks Michaelk, A couple weeks ago that would have gone way over my head, but now strangely made perfect sense! :D Sounds good to me. As long as the call isnt too long, which isnt a problem for me (cuz I loathe talking on the phone), the Nav wont have any lag.
 
I thought I read that it downloads the route to the phone. You might not be able to request an overlay but I bet the nav will still work. Good question - will be interesting to see the answer.
 
No simultaneous voice/data on Verizon CDMA at this time...when they roll out their new LTE network I believe that will be included. It's been that way on CDMA forever, regardless of phone.

I believe there is also some caching going on in the Nav app that affects how it works when the call occurs, but don't have details on that.
