Help Phone Calls and Text with Datas Only Plan

lstevens

Lurker
I'm about through with Apples walled garden and my constant need to keep up with jailbreaks. I have almost decided on a change to Nexus 4. However, I have one question:

I am a "data only" user (no phone plan). I make my calls through Skype Out, receive calls through my Google Voice number forwarded to my Skype In Number, and do my Texting through a free Text App (Text Now), also linked to my Google Voice Number.

With a Nexus 4 phone, will all of the above be possible? Also, will Google Voice Actions be able to "point" to alternative programs for Voice Calls and Texting (i.e. If I say "Call "Jim", can it call using Skype, or if I say Text "Jim", can it point to Text Now (or other alternative texting program)?

Any help is greatly appreciated. TIA

Are you talking about only using WIFI, or a SIM with only a Data plan from a carrier?

I've used GroveIP on wifi to make calls with Google Voice. I assume that Skype will have a way to read your contacts and call them that way.

I've also used the Google Voice app to send and receive texts.

Both of these things should work on just WIFI, or a plan that just includes data.

Who are you using for service?

I will use a data only SIM from my iPad. I assume that VOIP and data SMS will work. However, I am wondering if Google Voice Actions will be able to invoke Skype and an alternative texting program.

People on xda have reported the AT&T prepaid tablet plans work on the Nexus 4; is that what you plan on using?

The first time you use it, you'll be prompted which app you want to use to perform that action, if you select the app, then "Always", it should default to using that app whenever you use that function.

I'll install Skype to confirm.

For whatever reason, this appears to work when doing it manually, ie open dialer, select contact, dial, but not when using voice commands.

I'll continue to have a play around and see if I can get something to work.

you can possibly freeze the stock dialer to make it default to Skype or whatever...i haven't tried but i noticed this too....
