Root Phone constantly defaults to vibration/silent mode

This has been going on for the last couple weeks, and I can't figure out how to fix this annoying problem...

Whenever my phone's screen goes dark and I then use it, bringing the screen out of its "off" mode, the phone switches to vibration mode/sound off. I then have to press the up volume button to bring back the sound. This same problem also occurs at random times when I use an app, check Email or SMS messages, etc. It will suddenly and for no reason instantly switch to vibration mode/sound off. While it does this randomly when I use apps, it does it all the time when the screen goes off and I bring it back to life. I find myself having to always first turn the sound back on.

What's really problematic about this is that because of this, when I use the phone's alarm clock feature, because the phone has switched to vibrate, there is no sound, just vibrating, which is not loud enough to wake me up. In addition, my SMS notifications, ringtones, and other notifications all are either vibrations or silent.

I've monkeyed around with the sound profile, other settings, etc., and they all show the volume up, the sound(s) on, etc. Despite this, the damn phone just won't stop switching itself to vibration mode/sound off.

what rom are you on? have you tried to wipe dalvik cache and cache and see if that helps? also maybe try and wipe dalvik cache, cache and re-flash the rom...this way you will not loose data and it usually fixes most issues.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Marvin ...again!! :p:D

First thing I would recommend is to boot to recovery and wipe the cache and dalvik cache.

Before you do anything else make a nandroid backup.

I'd try to re-flash your rom. You can try to do a dirty flash, just wipe cache and dalvik and then flash the same exact rom overtop of itself. It works often enough to fix stuff, other times it doesn't work.

If that doesn't do it, I'd wipe the phone clean and start fresh.

I'm on flex's ROM, an older version (2.3), but that shouldn't be the problem, because the ROM I've had for several months; this volume problem started a couple weeks ago.

Actually, I've done the cache & dalvik cache wipe several times. I've also reflashed the ROM. These attempts didn't seem to help, unfortunately.

hmmm well maybe try out some other roms and see if it is a software issue. if it does the same thing on other roms then it is possible it could be a hardware issue....not sure what kind of hardware issue though....LOL

OK, I decided to try again one last time. I wiped both types of caches a few times, then I went and reflashed one of flex's ROMs--I think one that was one version away from the one I was using. So far, I'm on about 90 minutes of use and the issue has not recurred. (Watch my having now said this result in the damn problem resurrecting.) :p

Oh? I am sad to report that this morning the problem has recurred, except this time instead of it switching to vibrate mode, where the vibrating phone icon is shown in the top display bar, it switches to silent mode, where the musical note with the slash line through it shows in the top display bar.

I don't know what else to try, to be honest with you. I've even done a complete wipe and reinstall of the ROM, but that hasn't helped.

try flashing a stock rooted rom and see if the issue persists. are you s-on or s-off? maybe unrooting might be in your future or at least running a ruu.

I'm S-ON. Before I flash another ROM, I'm going to try one last thing. I'm uninstalling any audio control apps that I may have (I think I have one), even though I haven't done anything with any such audio app settings in 6 months or more.

Is the rom you're on match the firmware set you're on?

Reason being if there is a mismatch there, it "might" cause some weird stuffs to happen.

Absolutely let us know if that audio app is messing with stuff.

I had Audio Manager Pro, but I honestly don't recall using it much, if not at all. I looked at the settings but didn't notice anything that seemed out of the ordinary. Nevertheless, I uninstalled it completely a few hours ago. So far, no auto-switching to silent or vibrate. I don't know if this is merely coincidental or not, so I'll have to monitor it to see if the problem recurs anytime soon.

ahh yes good call, yeah firmware could be an issue depending on the rom you are on.

I don't doubt that. However, I've had the same firmware since installing this ROM months ago. It was humming along flawlessly for quite some time. I never updated any firmware or made any other changes to the phone's system or settings. This annoying problem simply popped up and wouldn't stop.

If you're on old firmware, it's probably time to get that updated. ;)

There's a few routes you can take, but personally, I'd go get S-off. Waaayyy easier to get your firmware updated than relocking the bootloader and taking an OTA. ;)

Easier said than done. ;)

One of these days, if I ever get the time, I'll go ahead and do this.

i'm not too familiar with flex's rom do you have a link? is it an older version? did the rom get an update? if the rom was updated to included the 3.16 OTA then you might need to update firmware and that might be difficult with s-on.

here is the guide to updating firmware:

I'm on one of his 2.XX base versions, and truthfully, everything else has been running smoothly, which is why I guess I haven't been in any kind of a rush to "upgrade".

Anyway...I can report that after having uninstalled Audio Manager Pro, I have so far not had the phone switch to silent/vibrate mode--36 hours and counting. :)
