On my HTC One M8 when you swipe up on the phone icon (as if you were going to make a call) you can either press the white bar where it says "phone towards the top of the screen and a drop down menu will come up that has "contacts"
Or swipe your finger right to left a few times and you will see the bar change from "phone" to "favorites" and then to "contacts.
