Phone Dialing Keypad

When calling a contact, is there a way to get a qwerty keypad instead of the numeric? I want to search for a contact by name (I don't know anyone's number), and typing letters on a dial pad is a pain.

When searching with the dial pad just pres the key that has the fist letter in the name then the second letter etc. It searches first for the letters and only uses the number if there is no letter match.

In other words for John press 5 6 4 6 and John should show up in the window. Same for last names

I understand that's how it works, but it's a pain. Seems like a throw back to the days of texting before we had qwerty keyboards. Is there no way to change it?

It essentially is a qwerty keyboard, you only have to press each number once, no matter what letter you want to use that corresponds to that number on the keypad. In my opinion a full qwerty keyboard would be more difficult to use.

Once you get accustomed to phones ability to search numbers and names first and last with only a few key strokes I think you will appreciate the numeric keypad vs the qwerty. The developers were trying to bring your contact to you in the fewest possible key strokes. To answer your question, I see no way to default to the qwerty keyboard during contact search.

I'm skeptical, but time will tell. I can say that right now the ability to find contacts on my Incredible feels far slower, more tedious and inferior to my Palm Centro! Maybe once I get accustomed to the Android way of things I'll feel different.

I've not used the Palm Centro so I sure can't judge between the two. And I'll admit that I don't do that many searches. I have assigned my most frequently called contacts into groups.. Family, Friends, Business, and a few custom groups. This lets me peruse a smaller group of contacts that I will scroll through quickly to make a call or to create a text. One way or another, as in all changes, there is a getting accustomed to period. The Dinc's idea of bringing your contacts to you is what they thought would suit the majority. If all else fails... I'm sure there is a third party app to be found that might manage/search your contacts in a fashion that is more to your liking. In any event... I hope you enjoy your Dinc.

Then you aren't doing it right. The search method the Incredible uses is darn near optimal. Unless you have alot of people with the same name it should converge to a couple/few names with 4 or less keystrokes (just like the centro, but using 9 keys instead of 30). And if you do have a huge number of people, you can search by last name (which should be faster). Or portions of the number (so if you know the area code and/or prefix).

However, I almost never use the search and instead just scroll. It lets you jump to the letter you want and I can find my contact from there.
