Hello,
When I am on the phone it goes dark then gets bright every few seconds. is there a way to stop this and have the phone stay bright.

menu > settings > display > Brightness
un check Automatic brightness and set the slider to your liking, lower = better battery life.

Or is it from the proximity sensor being activated/deactivated?

Then Hooligan77 got it right and it's the proximity sensor. There's no setting that I'm aware of that adjusts its behavior.

At the top of the screen on the left side right by the first "S" for Samsung is a sensor, almost looks like it would be a front facing camera, that is the proximity snesor. It shuts the screen off as the phone gets close to your face so your face doesn't activate any buttons. I have noticed at times when talking on speaker phone and holding it, my figner can activate it also.
