Help Phone getting sluggish

My bionic has been sluggish lately. Any tips on how to resolve besides clearing cache which I do periodically

I am on ICS 232, not the official upgrade. I did it so long ago I can't remember if I did a factory reset. It has worked great until recently though...I would hate to do a factory reset and set everything up again

The problem is that everyone needs to do the Factory Data Reset after the ICS upgrade. It may run for a few days without a problem or a few months without a problem. Then there's a problem. You don't know where you started from and you end up chasing your tail.

Your case is a little more complicated.

IF you decide to do it and go through the exercise then you would be better served by flashing back to stock. (I have never done it ... others here have.)

Mine has been very sluggish lately, and I'm totally stock. I did a FDR after ICS.

I'm not certain, but my sluggishness might have something to do with Opera browser or Swiftkey. I've had Opera browser since I did the FDR, and it has worked fine up until recently. I downloaded and installed Swiftkey recently but I have NEVER used it yet. The sluggishness seems to have started (or gotten worse/more noticeable) since then.

I also use Swype, so perhaps that's the culprit...or any other member of my app drawer.
 
Settings --> Apps --> All tab --> Opera --> Clear cache

Also, call logs and SMS take up memory, so using solutions like SMS Backup & Restore and Call Log Backup & Restore allow you to archive that content an then free up memory.

Cache for Gallery can take up a lot of memory too.
 
Thanks John. I hate to sound ignorant, but for the gallery what does the cache hold/do?

Also, is there a way to see how much each app has in its cache in tabular form? I'd like to start with the space hogs first.
 
The Gallery Cache is basically a cache of all your media files - if you don't move them around / delete them very often, it won't make too much of a difference, b/c that is partly how it generates thumbnails. However, if you tend to move things around a lot, then clearing the cache can help remove all those cached files in the database that are no longer in the original locations.

As for tabular form, I haven't really found one. I know that some task managers can do that, but you can easily see which apps are using the most space when you go to manage apps - in the all tab, hit the menu softkey on the phone and you can toggle the sort order between alphabetical and size.
 
The sort by size only takes into account the size of the application itself, not the cache, but in my experience the largest applications tend to have the largest cache. Also, take a look at any social media apps that you use (Facebook, twitter, etc.), particularly ones that you share photos / video with - those always have a lot of cache.

I used to use a cache cleaner app, but it gave me too many problems on the ICS leak builds before ICS was released for our phones so I stopped using it. I'll look around for a cache cleaning app now and see if I can find anything good.
 
Found one by a trusted developer. Cache Cleaner by JRummy.

It will scan all of your apps and list them with their respective cache sizes. You can:

  • clear all
  • clear selected
  • set the app to always clear when loading the app
  • set the app to always clear cache on boot

EDIT: Added the following

It seems to require root. At least, it asked me for root privileges. I'm not sure, maybe it only needs root to clear cache of system apps, but those tend to be the ones that have the largest cache folders / files anyway....
