Help Phone heating up!

Just got new Galaxy S2 yesterday and new to Android.

Had a weird problem this morning. I had copied a tv programme from bbc iplayer to my Galaxy S2. It wouldn't play and seemed to crash the media player which was annoying, but the worst thing was the the phone suddenly got very, very hot almost too hot to hold. The heat seemed to be coming from the left/top side of the phone. I turned the phone off and all back to normal.

I now know that iplayer tv programs only work when streamed and won't work if downloaded from PC and transferred to S2 but the heating up problem is very worrying.. Anyone noticed similar issues?

the left top of the phone is where the cpu is, so its likely while it looked like it had crashed it was stuck in some form of loop and was running the cpu at 100%, next time running task manager and hitting clear ram *may/should* fix the problem.

Thanks Teknik. I think you're right - it's just a shame I am so new to Android and couldn't find the task manager quick enough and paniced.

I hope this doesn't happened again as it would be quite worrying if a widget or something crashed while the phone was in my pocket and i didn't realise until I could smell something burning...!! I think I might report to Samsung somehow?

unfortunately its not really samsungs fault, it was the app that was at fault.
I have to assume that the phone has some form of overheat protection built in. However i know my pc can happily sit at 80degreesC with no performance or health issues.

i had the very same problem, but it get's heated up on every single app i open.. even the PAPER TOSS game...
i switched off the phone, cleared the ram and again started playing.. n with 2 minutes it was heated up again...
can anyone help me out please..

it seems your S2 may have a problem i would advise you to return it if possible

I was just trying an app to read the cpu model, it says it`s an Samsung s5pv310 , now if you search for info on this cpu, it says the recommended maximum frequency is 1000mhz , and ours is set to 1200mhz max , I suppose Samsung knows what they are doing.

Ohh Yeah, I have the free Kaspersky mobile anti-virus 2011 , but i cannot use it as when i do a scan my cpu temperature starts to rocket it got to 46c + before i cancelled the scan, as i did not want to damage my phone or my hand

Hmmm i didnt know that :). Defo the phone has a unjustified heat issue! Kicking that cpu into gear really clocks up heat to scramble some eggs :( :(.

just a general statement guys. You've gotta remember than on the GSII, the heat is almost directly transferred to your hands.

On other, thicker devices, there is more plastic, or metal, or "components" before it reaches your hands, so the heat is dissipated and hence less reaches your hand. On the GSII, it is so thin that the heat is transferred, but my guesses are, the vast majority will go through the thin plastic and onto your hands.

Of course it shouldn't get too hot, because when I'm running on a full load and GPS, it still is no way near "too hot."

It only got almost "too hot" the first time I used GPS, constantly driving through London. Since, the phone hasn't over heated. :)

Do you think I would be able to get a refund on the phone because of this fault / hazard? I like the phone but sat on bus playing construct x with music playing and the phone starts to get very warm, and that is through the case!!

Yes, you could do that. Just upgrade the firmware and all the problems are fixed.

Wait till you've tried HD games on it.

I cooked lunch on the phone.

I have read on the xda forums that if you root it and flash it to the right kernel and firmware the temperature drops a lot while playing HD games. I play constantly Real football and PES2011 as well as others. I will root this Saturday and If I do not brick my phone I will let you know if it is true.

Updated firmware will help the heat problem. Its been a known issue with older firmware. Update to the latest firmware.

Hello. Yes have the same problem with my phone too. They say it's because too many apps are on. And yesterday I installed Lookout app and while it is updating, my phone is warming up. And while it was updating, someone called me and I couldn't talk for long coz my ear was feeling hot too.
What can i do? I should delete some apps?
Thank you

hay OP. Does your iPlayer video look like its skipping / not smooth on Medium and High Quality Playback????

I have had issues with this app from day 1. Video (especially panning) is just not smooth.
