That pic of your first phone looks like it came out around the same time as my first one (around 1997), the Moto MicroTac 650e. They couldn't do anything but call, but they were also pretty much indestructible.

Yup made calls, that's it, good'ol Technophone but you are right, you could chuck the thing against a brick wall and it would be unscathed.
