I need help! (Referred here by Scot from @GalaxySsupport .)
I have a Samsung Captivate that is stuck in a reboot loop. It looks like this:
When I turn it on, the S logo stays on the screen for a very long time (several minutes). After the unlock screen loads, the phone is semi-responsive for a short time, but is very slow.
Sometimes it can get as far as showing the "prepping internal storage" status notification (or something along those lines), but often not. I once noticed the words "safe mode" in the corner of the pattern unlock screen, but the phone still rebooted anyway.
After a half-minute or so, the phone freezes, and slowly does the one-vibrate...two-vibrate...three-vibrate-then-reboot thing. Then it goes to a blank screen with a pretty long pause, before eventually the launcher appears again (and then the phone freezes and reboots again, etc.).
As far as I know (i.e. unless there was an over-the-air update that I didn't witness), my phone is on the official Captivate Froyo. It's never had any attempts at rooting.
I didn't witness when this started happening - I had the phone charging overnight, and noticed it restarting over and over in the morning.
Prior to this problem, I did have some occasional random restarts, but I could at least use the phone for several hours before it would reboot.
I can get into the "Android system recovery <3e> Samsung Recovery Utils - for BML -" screen, but I don't know what do there. On a hunch that maybe there was a bungled over-the-air update, I did try choosing "reinstall packages", but that seemed to do nothing (just an error message: "E:failed to open /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip (no such file or directory)").
I don't have a backup of all my data - maybe some bits and pieces here and there, but I'd prefer being able to recover the data if there's a way to do it (even if it's more difficult). I do have some Android developer software, and I'm not afraid of using advanced tools.
Thanks for any hints or suggestions or help!
