Phone is lagging

I'm considering returning this while I still have a chance, and coughing up $300 for the Galaxy S3

I just bought the Reverb (with JellyBean) and I really liked it at first, but it lags sometimes. I don't get it. My friend has an HTC one SV and he says it never lags-- does a dual core processor make that much of a difference?

I have about 60 applications in total. it came with 38 and I downloaded 22. It takes up half of the phone's available storage. I usually don't have more than 1 active program at one time, although a lot of RAM is always being used on background processes and services-- the most memory hogging of which is Facebook and Facebook Messenger. I read that this is normal on android-- to have almost full RAM usage and any given time.

It usually lags when I'm playing a game like fruit ninja. It was worse when I was listening to music at the same time.

Is this normal? Why can't this phone seem to handle things that a phone with similar specs can handle? Is it the lack of a dual core processor? Or is it a RAM thing?

Update:

I read that this is a problem for others too, ever since the OS update to Jellybean. Some people experience freezing. I found out that disabling the "hotword detection" feature makes a huge difference, but it sounds like people were still experiencing the freezing after doing this. Unless there have been any fixes to this in the last month?

Have you tried closing running apps that you aren't using when its lagging to see if that helps?

Closing as in killing tasks? No. I heard that was bad.

I consider "running apps" everything that is listed under the running apps tab, which includes background processes.

If you're talking about active apps, then yeah I never have more than 2 at the same time. If I restart my phone, wait for to finish booting up, and then start fruit ninja, it will lag a little.

Yes the running apps tab is what I was referring too. It very well could be the processor. How long is the lag? Is it when you just touch the screen does it happen? Or is it the responsiveness on the phone? Most androids have a little lag on the touch. It's not as smooth as an iPhone.

If you're rooted, try installing mrg666's custom kernel in the All Things Root forum. It'll speed up your phone.
Not sure why the above poster says Android is laggy in general though, mine doesn't lag at all, and neither did my old one.

The touch responsive on iPhone and android is different. IPhone you touch once it responds, some androids that is not the case it has happened to us all where you have to mash a button or keep pressing for it to respond. There are android phones that get laggy. My nexus does when I'm low on ram or have downloaded an app that just isn't gonna work on my phone. It can get laggy when ppl are low on memory or some type of sw issue. These do happen n most ppl don't know they need to clear out there phones on a regular or not download every thing from the play store. Some phones just have sw issues original galaxy n s2 were terrible with that.
