Help Phone is running out of space, but it's not.

Howdy,

I don't know what the threshold is but when my phone gets down to like 17 megs free on the internal storage, I get the little icon in the corner telling me I'm low on space.

When that happens, I also start getting errors when I try to send a text or open my browser that say "Phone storage is full" or something like that. This then completely prevents me from using the browser or sending a text message.

What the heck is up with that? 17 megs is a huge amount of space to be free. Why would that prevent me from using my phone? Is there something I can do to fix that or change when it thinks I'm low? I have to keep uninstalling things just to get my phone to work.

This is an Optimus V on 2.2.2
 
I also get the low memory icon at 17megs, but I don't think it has ever stopped me from sending a text or browsing.

But yes, your choices are to remove unnecessary apps or, if you haven't already, transfer some of them to your SD.
 
Just like your computer, or any device that uses digital storage of any kind, your phone needs some free space. 17megs is where the phone starts to panic. It stops receiving texts to ensure that there is space for necessary OS functions.

Try filling your computer's hard drive to capacity and see the hilarity that ensues.

If you are rooted you can install Link2SD which will help free up gobs of space. Or you can use Titanium Backup and backup apps with data, then uninstall less used apps. When you do need those less used apps you just restore the app and data.

If you are not rooted, your best bet is to uninstall your less used apps. Or if you have multiple apps for the same function, get rid of one of them. At one point I had 3 browsers on my phone. If you have any apps that can be moved to SD, that will free up some space as well.
 
Best bet is to root, it's very easy. It took me 6 months to decide and wish I had the day after I got the phone. I almost always have over 100mb free. 17mb is not a lot, cache can build up fast (make sure your browser stores cache on SD), or use a cache cleaner each day.

Otherwise, uninstall Angry Birds...;)
 
1) Try moving as many apps as you can to your SD card
2) Try clearing all data from apps/programs that's 1 MB or more
3) Try clearing your cache
4) Try deleting some of your text messages
5) Try uninstalling some of the updates from where, scvngr, twitroid, etc... if you don't use those apps

all of these helped clear mine. I'm at 30 MB of free phone storage space
