Root it. And set your phone free.
Okay. "Rooting" your phone is simply getting root user access (Linux term which Android is based on). It allows you to access your phones operating system which certain apps need to work. And depending on how you use your phone you may not need to do it. Here is a link to a thread dedicated just for that for our phone:

i just got the metro pcs opimus m and its soo slow... i cant watch utube vids and i want to overclock it but the right aps are not offered. i cant even get task killer.. what the ****?"
metro pcs 2g is somewhat slow and will have a hard time playing youtube vids so if you're not on a wifi connection that is your problem with that issue. . as far "overclocking" it, that won't really help much as far as watching youtube vids on metros connection. task killers are available in the android market for it. it's one of the first apps that come up under "free apps"

Fortunately I do not have a slow optimus m. I have had absolutely no issues from this phone. My only gripe is that it came installed with android 2.2.1
At this time it can not be rooted. i view you tube vids with no problem when running wifi. That is one of the draw backs to the optimus. I am running task killer and lookout and have zero issues.

If you head over to the Optimus M forums you can read up on how to root stock 2.2.1 as it can and has been done by many of my fellow M users over there with no issue.
In fact we also have a custom recovery and ROM for both 2.2 and 2.2.1 versions.

well if your optimus is a stock 2.2.1, *it should be since you just got it* then sorry but there will be no overclocking it just yet. a few of us are actually working on making a kernel for that though so stay here on the forums and we'll post when we have that for you 
as for task killers, stop using them is my advice, they will kill your battery and slow your phone down even more than it is. its an android lunix thing. android runs a process minimally in the background and kills it when its been BGed for too long or resources are needed for other processes. but if you kill a process early then android later when you re-open that app has to reload it from the start, that and if the task killer keeps killing an app that needs to stay open *facebook for example loves to open itself* then it will keep opening up and being closed. a cyclical start that will run your battery even in standby.
