Phone Keeps R?eformatting

I'm having a problem with my GN that I was hoping someone may be able to help me with.

I keep my phone in my front pocket. Apparently, I'm pretty rough with it because I accidentally press buttons on it from time to time. This has led to me pulling my phone out to find it reformatting twice in the last two months (android with belly open, when it finishes, all of my apps are gone and it looks like it just came out of the box).

I have a ton of apps on this and so putting all of those back on, losing settings, etc. is a total pain in the ass. I have a few questions:

1. Is there any way I can stop this from happening?

2. Is there a backup program that I can get that would preserve my apps, settings, folder structure, etc.? Realize that I may have to root the phone to do this.

I'm obviously not an expert with Android, I'm just a guy who really doesn't want to support Apple, but I can't keep wasting time with this.

This doesn't make any sense to me.

You have accidentally, randomly, twice in two months, pressed enough buttons (and ONLY those buttons - not one "home" key or "back" key or anything to interrupt it) to either:

A) Pull down notification shade > hit settings > scroll to Backup and Reset > hit Factory data reset > hit the button that says Reset Phone > Hit Confirm

or

B) Long press power button > press Shutdown > Long press button + up/down volume keys > Press volume down twice > press power button > scroll to factory data reset > press power button > scroll to confirm > press power button

This seems nuts. Do you have something different on your phone every time you pull it out of your pocket? Do you ALWAYS have an app open or something pulled up?

Definitely password or pattern lock your phone - that should solve it. But I think something else is going on here that's causing the problem.
 
Good point. Maybe he should set the password, and if it still does it, we know there are bigger issues.
 
lol i was about to ask how tight your pockets where and what else is in the pocket with your phone.

I'm not saying it's not possible but it just seems like it would be really hard for that to happen.
