Help phone keypad problem

Hi,

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 on VZW. Often when I make a call that requires keypad presses (e.g. for menu selection), I touch the keypad icon, but the keypad goes blank when my finger approaches it, then reappears (after a couple of seconds) when I pull my finger away. I have to hang up and start the call again, hoping that the problem will not reoccur, which it does about half the time.

Really aggravating! Is this a bug?

You finger may be casting a shadow on the sensor at the top right of the phone. Try coming in from the bottom and see if you can use it.

It is an annoying byproduct of something useful

Can't be the case. Sometimes it works and I touch the screen in the same way. Other apps (and I have many on my device) work fine.
