Help Phone Location

Lurker
I noticed a really weird thing today on my phone. Usually my location is shown correctly on the weather tab or huge clock.

Anyway, for some odd reason, it was showing that I was in Mons-en-Baroeul, France. So I turn off my phone and it now it's back to normal but I was just wondering..

Have this ever happened to any of you? Is this a case of statellite clash?

Most likely you had your GPS off, and WiFi on and were getting a location using Google Location Services. What happens is, your phone reports to Google the mac addresses of WiFi's around it, Google runs that through some database and algorythms, and reports back a location.

So, most likely its an error in Google's database, some wifi signal, for what ever reason, Google thinks is in France.

Chances are, if you return to that same location, and there are no other correctly mapped wifi signals around, it will do it again.

There is a website somewhere where you can report bad wifi mapped locations to google.
