Is there an app that can lock/unlock the phone using numbers instead of the dots ?

have you updated to 2.2(froyo) yet? since updating you can choose to us the dots, pin, or pasword.
hit Menu-Settings-Location and Security-Set screen lock.
you will see 4 choices
None
Pattern(dots)
Pin
Password.

if your still running 2.1 you only have 2 options.
