the problem i have with backing up to outlook is that i have about 1000 email contacts in outlook which i dont want to sync back to my phone. i am currently backing up to windows contacts (i think its windows 7/vista tool)

Are you backing up to Outlook? That handles all of the fields...

I never tried it for Outlook but works perfectly for google contacts. This is the one I used to convert all my Phone contacts to Google contacts. If you find it is not supporting Outlook then my suggestion would be import it first in Google contacts then you can go with

once you have them in the google contacts, how would go about putting them back onto the phone say after a firmware update?

If you set your phone to snyc with your google account (i.e during startup) you won't have to do anything, it will automagically download all of your contacts to the phone

We can enable Contact source as Google in the Phone (PeopleMenuViewGoogle). This will eliminate backing up contacts each time for any factory reset or ROM update.
