Phone overheating while charging

I was charging my incredible today and after a few hours I noticed the red led light blinking. Thinking it was a missed call I picked it up and noticed it was really hot! I have battery snap app and when I checked the status it said the battery was overheating. I had it plugged into the wall charger that came with the phone. Is this normal? It wasn't charging that long...maybe 4 or 5 hours. I'm worried about leaving my phone on the charger at night time (which is usually when I charge my phones). Does the standard charger not have one of those chips that keeps the battery from over charging??

Also, when I took the phone off the charger after noticing it was hot, the battery widget said it dropped from 100% to about 90% after only 10 min. Did I screw up my battery? If so, please tell me it's covered under the insurance. Thanks for any input!

Honestly, I would not trust a third party app telling you the battery is overheating nor the battery % (although the latter would be more reasonable than the former). As long as you did use the HTC provided adapter and cable, you will be fine. My phone gets warm when I'm charging it too.

Mine got hot the first day while charging, this was due to gaming and internet use while charging i believe. Try to limit use during charging. Of course I should take my own advice as I'm sending this from my Incredible while its on the charger.

My battery overheated a few times when it was hot outside. My first weekend with the Incredible I used the camcorder at a baseball game and the phone overheated. It was around 85-90 degrees out. I use an app that tells me the percentage left and the temperature. It seems whenever the battery hits 118 degrees it's overheating. I don't know where the app gets that info from or if it's accurate, but I've tried two different apps at the same time and they both gave me the same exact info, so I'm assuming they're pulling the readings from the same place.
