I want to use one of my galaxy phones as a monitor for my door system. Can I leave it permanently 'on charge' with the screen 'on'?

Do you have a phone with the function ( always on Screen ), i dont know about the always charging.... it seems it would be bad for the Battery

what phone do you have? most phones do not have a feature to leave the screen all the time. the problem with leaving the phone on all the time is burn in.....especially for monitoring a door. that door will at some point burned into the screen. it is why most phones do not have this feature.

edit:sorry just realized it was about charging......yes that is fine to leave it charged all the time.

Well burn-in is a feature of OLED screens. An LCD can run for much longer without worrying about that.

There are apps that can keep the screen on, though if whatever you use for the monitor lacks that permission I don't know if you can truly do this (I have a Tasker profile to do this when certain apps are running, but it just sets the timeout to something much longer than the system settings low rather than truly disabling it).

As for the battery, when full it should switch to trickling, or turn off charging until it falls a few percent. Leaving it like that for a few days won't be a problem. Leaving it for a year I don't know about. I'd keep an eye out for any sign of battery swelling.

Basically this sounds like you're attempting to re-purpose a smartphone to do something it's not intended to do. Why not just buy a webcam, something that is by design to be used to visually monitor something like a door entryway.

Are you going to be using some kind of screen casting app to remotely view the Camera app? Or you instead using some kind of remote access app to remotely view the Camera app? If the former that will require you to install an app like Caffeine so the screen is always on, if the latter you can use an app like AirDroid to remotely access the Camera app with the screen in sleep mode (functionally the OS and apps are still active, it's just the display that's sleeping).
The battery issue is a different matter. If this is smartphone you don't use anymore, from a long-term perspective leaving it always plugged into its power adapter will have a negative affect on the battery's overall use-life. Leaving it for a few months always charged at 100% is bad for the battery. It won't burst, the phone's charging circuitry prevents it from overcharging but it is bad for the battery in the long term. Not a big deal if you don't need to use this phone anymore, but something to consider it you'll be reusing it later.

But I still think you'll find it a lot less of a hassle to just buy a webcam instead:

Thanks so much everybody for your advice.
I am so surprised at your interest. Thank you.
The full story is that I am running a doorcam monitoting system called Doorbird. It's operated from my S20 phone. I would like a couple more permanent dedicated screens around. Doorbird sells these at £450 each !!!
I am using an old Samsung tablet P600 and an old S8 phone which are quite happily showing the live doorcam all the time 24-7.
My query to you all was whether keeping them on charge all the time 24-7 is harmful. Thanks for all the advice.
