Help Phone process chewing CPU on Xperia

Matthew D

Lurker
Hi all,

I have an XPeria Z1 compact (not rooted) that is causing me grief. More and more frequently, the battery starts to drain and the phone starts to become sluggish, and I check the processes and find that the "Phone" process (com.android.phone) is using a lot of CPU. Also using lots of CPU (more than usual) are the Android System process McAffee Security processes.

I can't kill off or reset the Phone process (or else doing so makes no difference), and there doesn't seem to be any way to fix it other than rebooting the phone, though sometimes, unpredictably, the problem resolves itself.

This is driving me crazy. Suggestions as to how to resolve it, or even how to delve deeper into what is causing it, would be much appreciated.

A couple of things to look at....

1. In the Battery usage stats, is "Cell standby" listed? If so select it and look at the "time without signal" figure.

2. Try switching the "Preferred network type" (Settings/More/Mobile networks) to WCDMA/GSM from the default 4G/WCDMA/GSM setting. This will prevent the handset attempting to aggressively hang on to a weak 4G signal in areas of poor reception.

Thanks for the suggestions. When it does it again I can take a look. I'm pretty sure it's not related to poor reception though - it was happening today at home, and I have strong signal here.
