Phone shuts down

Here's what's happening with my Bionic...

Every 2-3 days, I'll try to wake my phone to use it by pressing the power button and nothing happens. Not only will it not wake, but long pressing the power button will not cause it to start. I then do one of two things to have to restart the phone...

I pull the battery and it starts just fine. Or, I can plug it in and then long press the power button and it will start up. The strange thing with this option is that when I plug it in, the battery icon first appears and it shows no juice for the battery. This happens even if the battery is at 100%.

Once it restarts, everything is fine...until it does it again 2-3 days later.

This has happened when the phone was on Gingerbread and it still happens on ICS (the phone is not rooted).

Any idea why this is happening or what's causing it?

It's hard to say for sure, but my guess (based on what I highlighted in bold) is that you have a bad battery. Perhaps the battery contacts are bad and not registering correctly, or just something inside the battery is flaky.

Somebody is selling it for $5.25 with free shipping on Amazon; may be worth a try: Amazon.com: Motorola SNN5892A OEM XT875/Droid Bionic Standard Battery (HW4X) - Non-Retail Packaging - Black: Cell Phones & Accessories

Or, you can try to get a warranty exchange with Verizon?

I called Verizon and they're going to swap out the phone for another one since it's still under warranty. I asked about a potential battery issue and they said it was rare for a problem to exist with the battery. They said it was more likely with the phone itself.

I suggest you pull out the battery and try cleaning the battery contacts with a pencil eraser. There may be some oxidation on the terminals that prevent a good contact. Another user reported success with this technique.

If that fails I think it is a bad battery.
