Root Phone shuts down

Hi All,
I'm rooted and running the excellent IcySpirit rom and have been for several weeks without any problems. Last week or so my phone occasionally becomes either unresponsive or is shutting down by itself. If I pull the battery and reboot ...no problems ..until it happens again. Seems to be happening more and more as time goes on.
I've read that cleaning the battery contacts with an eraser is a good thing to do which I'm going to try.

Any other thoughts or ideas are appreciated.

Thanks.....Tom

I have had that issue on older phones, one thing to try is wiping your internal card. And don't restore apps back onto the phone once you install a new rom, install them fresh.

sounds like you have an app on the phone that's causing a conflict. best thing to do is delete all the apps off the phone and then install one by one and see if you get a shutdown.

Thanks for the replies. I also don't think its an issue with the rom. I haven't made any change to the apps I've been running all along except I did install "Tango" just check it out. I think I'll start by uninstalling it and take it from there.

One thing to note is that the phone gets VERY hot and the battery life is much shorter.

Thanks Again..Tom

Definitely sounds like an application is keeping a wakelock, running your processor at max, and causing it to overheat. Try to see which application is running in the background when it shouldn't be. Good luck

Getting worse..when I go to the play store I get:
Authentification is required. You need to sign in to your Google Account. "RETRY"

and I can't sign in. I can update twitter.

Also when I reboot the phone "scanning media files " notice doesn't go away like it used to.

Here's where the problem is. Don't know what's causing it. When I reboot the phone "scanning media files " notice doesn't go away like it used to.

Any Ideas are appreciated....Tom

Wipe everything and reflash ROM. That's what I would do

I agree with killajoe.

@odatkid

Also I remember you asked a few weeks ago whether you should restore android id with titanium. I suggested not to since I never do and never had any issues.

If you decide to reflash... First restore your backup of the stock rom, this will also restore the original android id. Then flash your rom of choice, only this time restore the original android id with titanium.

Perhaps this will make all the difference. Good luck bro. ;)

Thanks again GT and KJ,
Here's what I discovered: My SD card appears to be bad. I took it out to back it up using a card reader and I can see the folders in it but can't copy any. PC freezes like the phone did.
I'm going to get a new SD card and start over. Phone still works with "IcySpirit" although it appears I lost what was on my 16gb SD card. I do use titanium backup but now it doesn't see that I have the pro license because I think the key was stored on the SD card. So first things first.
How can I get PlayStore to recognize my phone? I get:

"Authentification is required. You need to sign in to your Google Account. RETRY"

It sees my email address and calender seems to work and sync with my PC.
Once I get the SD card I'll start over and re-root and perhaps try GT's new ROM.
Thanks again for all your help.......Tom

Try going into recovery and....

---wipe cache
---advanced - wipe dalvik cache

See if this helps.

Hopefully will fix your problem. If your phone still gets hot
settings -> power saver - > battery use to figure out what app(s) are burning your battery.

I think I might have screwed up. Phone set-up started asking for Language, etc. All my apps are gone but I can get to the play store and can re-install what I want. Went to "about phone" and it's showing IcySpirit V 2.o as the build number.
GT or someone:
Can you tell me what the steps are to get to install "Katana" from here. Also, do I need to format my new sdhc Card and if so, how?

Thank you again........Tom

When I buy new sd cards I pop them into the phone and the phone does all the formatting and prepares it for use.

When you say you screwed up, you actually didn't. Just seems like you did a factory reset in recovery aside from the steps I gave you. This would erase your downloaded apps and require phone set-up.

Did you check to see if the issue is fixed now?

To install other rom you can follow the same directions that come with the rom. You can also use the more detailed instructions bnb25 did here...

Installing rom on spirit

Also the next time you do a backup for your phone, make a copy of the backup on your PC for safe keeping. In case your sd card fails.

GT, Thanks again. I installed the new sd card and did not format it and everything seems to be fine. I installed the "Katana" Rom and love it!
I may have a question or two but I'll post them there "[ROM][MS870] Katana - AOSP hybrid"

Thank you again!!! Tom:)
