Help Phone shuts off by itself

Hey guys, about once every other day, I mysteriously find my phone has shut itself off or is rebooting. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the power options which can be accessed by holding down the power button. You can still access it even when the phone is locked, and it is the equivalent of a "pants call". Very annoying.

I found this one thread about how to disable the power options, but my phone has completely different files in that folder, plus I'm not able to save edits on the one file which seems to be relevant - qwerty.kl

Disable "Power Options" while locked

Before rushing off to try and re-write your phones OS using instructions for the Motorola Atrix and potentially, "bricking" it... have you considered any of the alternative options for Power Off available from the Market?

See here:-

What makes you so sure that it is a, "pants call". It could be a rogue app that is causing the problem or a Task Killer such as Juice Defender, etc.

You could try doing a Factory data reset (Settings > Privacy) and installing your app's one-by-one to see if it is a badly coded app or maybe one that is in conflict with another app.

Hope this helps. :D

I did look at apps to disable the lock screen power options and didn't find any that did that. I can't say for sure that it's a "pants call" but it usually happens when in my pants. In any case, I have never seen it happen while it's just been in my hands which you would think it would at least occasionally if it was something else.

I note the word, "usually". It could be something that only occurs when the front sensors are blocked.

Either way, a Factory data reset and piece meal re-install would eliminate the other possibilities I mentioned.

I say usually only because it has happened a couple of times when I was absent-mindedly holding it in my hand - times when I could've hit the power button accidentally and then easily touched some button. I can't say for sure but it was likely that the front sensor was not blocked these times.

A full re-install might help me isolate the issue but it would also be a complete pain in the ass considering I have almost a hundred apps. Plus, it doesn't seem like a very good lead since most of the times it happens is when the phone is in my pocket. My phone sits on my desk all day at work and if it was an app conflict, you would expect it to be susceptible in that state. And yet, it has never once shut off or reboot when just sitting idle on my desk. Only when it is being shuffled around either in my pocket or in my hand or one time, in my laptop bag.

FWIW, I have solved this problem. I installed WidgetLocker which has an option to "Block Power Dialog" on the lock screen. No more random shutdowns for me :D
