Help Phone Shutting off randomly?

So far my refurb Captivate hasn't had a random shutdown in the week I've been using it. Out of the five or six times the original had shut down (no random shut downs until after I installed the leaked 2.2) I had four instances under the same situation.

Background: I use my phone as an alarm clock. In 2.1 if I just went back in and (recycled) saved the alarm wake time it would automatically assume that I meant 'the next day', where 2.2 required me to manually change the day of the week I wanted the alarm to go off (again, no shutdown issues until after I uploaded 2.2). I found repeatable shutdowns when I would wake up before the alarm sounded and shut off, but not deleted, the alarm. Despite having turned off the alarm it would actually go off when it was supposed to have and within a minute the screen would shut down and the phone would have powered itself off. I was using a 2 minute timeout so it caught my eye the first time and I began watching for that specific behavior which, as I said, occurred three more times before I got the refurb.

At no point did I have to remove the battery, merely hold down the power button until the ATT screen came up and the phone restarted normally.

Odd.

As a followup to my post #325 above on 2.1 Update 1, after changing to wifi enable with "never sleep" so far so good with Captivate Keep Alive. Had alarm set this morning, it went fine and no issues of shut down when screen off. Hoping that Keep Alive is updated for 2.2. when 2.2 is officially released by AT&T.

I couldn't decide whether to buy a Captivate or wait for Windows Phone 7. Went for Captivate two days ago, and it shut itself off twice already. I know what I'm going to do as soon as Windows phone comes out, which should be before my 30-day deadline.

Hi all, I got a refurb Captivate about a week ago. I've been due an upgrade for about a month now, but I've been low on cash so I waited. I was overjoyed to see that I could get a refurb Captivate for free with a contract re-up. This is the phone I was planning on getting anyway as it's the best Droid phone ATT sells as far as I can tell. The only thing that made me nervous was wondering "Why are refurb Iphones 150 still and and the Captivate is free when they are both 200 new?". I put it out of my mind figuring people turn phones in before the 30 days all the time. Maybe they just decided they'd rather have an Iphone! Well, I got the phone and signed up for 200mb data plan figuring that I will mostly be using it in my house over wifi anyway. Well, yesterday I got a text from ATT telling me that I've used 65% of my data plan already! I don't see any way thats possible. I always keep background data off unless I'm using the app store which makes me. The only thing that could have used that much data was I was listening to a streaming audio book the other day. I had Wifi on, but I noticed that the 3g thing was up simultaneously. Usually when I have the WiFi on and check the phone after the screen goes off, it shows the 3g icon for a second then the WiFi icon comes on and it goes away. When they were both on I didn't see any of the red or green arrows lighting up on the 3g icon indicating that it was being used so I didn't think anything of it. Apparently it must have been going over it the whole time though! I can't find any way to turn the wireless data off completely so now I'm always paranoid that I'm using it and don't even know it! Also I have the same problem with the phone deciding to turn itself off. It usually only happens while I'm asleep. It's only happened once during the day. Also, the first time I plugged it up to charge when I went to bed, when I woke up it was locked up. Like the screen was on and had white static looking lines across it like an old tv when its coming on. I just got the captivate keep alive app and will see how it works. It seems like it burns a lot of battery though and the life isn't that good to begin with. I'm seriously thinking about whether I need to return this before its too late. I hate that too, because I really love the phone when its working right. Does anyone know if I'm stuck with the 2 year reup? It's only been a week, and if I can get out of it I may go to Sprint. The EVO and unlimited data is looking really good right now. Whatever is causing it, it is certainly not anything they fixed with the refurb I can say that for sure. The phone looked like they just tossed it in the box. It wasn't sitting in it's little slot in the box right or anything. Otherwise it looked fine, no scraches or anything.

I apologize for the wall of text above. I used paragraphs I swear, but they didn't show up for some reason. I tried editing and adding spaces, but it just went back the same.

You have a $200 phone, a computer with internet connection, and can't afford $5 for an alarm clock at walmart? Really?

You know you should go work for AT&T Warranty, that is exactly the answer they gave me! I spent $200 dollars on a phone should I not expect every part of the phone to work? If you bought a high end dishwasher and found that it was not drying your dishes would you expect to go to walmart and buy yourself a towel, I mean your dishes are clean right, being dry is just icing on the cake right? I mean, Really?

Welcome!

Good first post. Gave me a chuckle.

Yes, the alarm should work. As for the GPS not working properly, get a TomTom. :D

my cells was shutting down often, i installed CKA and for 7 days has not shutted down, but it seems to run out of battery more often, today i mailed the cell to samsung for them to investigate. i love the phone.

What percentage was your slider set to when you were using CKA?

This forum is extremely useful for identifying that my 2 days old Samsung captivate is having the same issue. Sent the phone back to the store and now i am getting it exchanged for a new one. I hope the new one does not have this issue. Fingers crossed!

the latest update has caused several issues on my phone. I installed an 8GB card and the phone started doing random reeboots... put the 2GB back in and now its fine, other than the other issues caused by update...

I am on the same boat here. I wish I have not updated. Since the update, phone randomly boots every few hours. Before the update, I had no problems with the phone

PS: I also have a 8gb sd inserted

Just curious which update you are referring to?

I currently have (all AT&T stock):

Firmware: 2.1 update 1

Is there a newer one?

Thanks.

I unchecked Power Saving mode and set the Sleep to 30 minutes. So now I push the Power button when I want to put it in sleep. I have not had it shut down unexpectedly in 3 days since making these changes.

For what it's worth...
I do have ATK installed but I don't let the service run. I only use it when I feel I need it, then stop it's service when I'm finished killing apps.

Background
I had my phone a few days when it shut off for the first time (in my pocket). It shut off again a day later (again in my pocket). It seems that it began to shut down more frequently when I changed the sleep timeout from 2 minutes down to 1 minute. In other words, it would go to sleep before I was done using the screen. And it would randomly shut down when it was just on the desk (not in my pocket).

I kept the Power Saving option on until I read Jack's post. Now it stays off.

These settings seemed to help. I went several days without a problem. Then a few days later I could not unlock the screen using the number pad (a requirement from my company when using corporate email on my phone - ms exchange). This has only happened once and I think it was due to my home WiFi was on the fritz. I had to use the power button to shut the phone down and then restart. It hasn't happened since. I think it was an anomaly.

Then a day later I had a random shutdown - the phone was off. I pushed the power button to start it up again. So, after that I installed Captivate Keep Alive. I don't think it has shut down again.

So that's about 8 days with one or two shut downs.

I know Jack would say to turn it in. I'm getting close to my 30 days so I will make a decision soon. I hesitate to return it because I don't think the issue is fixed yet (with the newer phones) - or at least it's not guaranteed. No offense Jack. :)

And I don't want the Aria (smaller screen and slower processor) or the Motorola's that AT&T have. And the Win 7 is too new of a platform. Anyhow, don't feel like there are many Android phones from AT&T to choose from.

Hope this helps. Thanks for reading.

Had the phone since August. Usually had one random shut down a week, but only if I hadn't rebooted for ~a week. So I hadn't worried about it. But now I've had a random shut down several times in the last week and two this morning. Getting worried - fortunately it's ALWAYS happened in the am (usually on my way to work or shortly after arriving), so I'm hoping that CKA fixes it. The alternative explanation (that the couple of very gentle tumbles it's taken in the last two weeks did bad things) is too horrible to contemplate.

Definitely sounds like CKA will fix your problem...

Within 30 days, exchange it. Random shutdowns are not universal and the issue cries out for an exchange (or exchanges).

Beyond the 30 days, if a user is adverse to a refurb and the shutdowns can be associated with a well-charged unit, CKA is the answer. It's a more sophisticated means by which the CPU is kept busy at the high-charge levels. Pre-CKA my layman thought was to keep WiFi on at all times with the same goal, but, alas, this was conjecture. Valid? Don't know, but CKA now obviates the need for full-time WiFi. Complementing CKA is the thought that if power management is less-than-sturdy, never let the phone enter a sleep cycle on its own at any charge level.

Talked to AT&T and samsung. Both seem to think its a battery problem. They all said this is the first they have heard of it. I told them about this thread lol. They have sent me a new battery and let me keep the old one. So I will see if this works. Will update tomorrow to see if my phone stopped turning off on its own.

Go to Android Market and get "Captivate Keep Alive", seems to solve the problem. I'm on my THIRD captivate and it still does it. This problem is all over the net. Hope this helps!

First off, I've had my Captivate 2 weeks... of which I have experienced the random shut-off / non-wake-up from sleep problem exactly 6 times. From those six, 3 have been approx. 15 minutes after unplugging from the "100%" charge notice, and the other 3 have been entirely random. After reading as many posts as possible about this specific issue, I've gathered the information, jotted down what I felt was likely or unlikely, created my tables and deduced a possible solution for my particular phone and specific scenario without changing settings or uninstalling applications or changing roms.

Here are some thoughts, since it seems the workarounds presented are going in every single direction:

Software / App problem: Highly unlikely. ....Owners would be having more of an issue while they are actively using the phone and the apps... not just the specific case of "going to sleep and not waking up".

Power settings: Possible, but there really aren't a whole lot of options to mess with.

Hardware / Phone problem: unlikely. ...It does not appear, from everyone's post, that it happens when plugged in. If it were an internal problem, it would happen whether plugged in or running on battery. Also, the fact that some owners could be on their 2nd or 3rd phone and it still shuts off after sleep is unlikely.

Known scenarios: It seems to happen more after being charged for a longer period of time. It does NOT happen plugged in. There's a HUGE number of posts where owners are getting extremely erratic phone charging characteristics and poor battery life performance. In addition, the battery meter and charge meter are innacurate to many experiencing this problem.

Summary thoughts: The problem with the shut-off AND the erratic charge behavior combined with poor battery performance and new batteries not always fixing the problem points me in one direction... the battery connection itself.

Prior to this fix, my battery performance was underwhelming... not nearly as bad as some have claimed, but not nearly as good as the spec sheets state. Previous numbers were a 2%+ drop per hour standby (nowhere near the 300 hours as per Samsung), and moderate use (flipping through pages, checking out a couple of sites, emailing and texting, etc.) dropped approx. 10% per hour... and heavy use dropped 15-20% per hour. I do not have any numbers for the battery draw for talk time, but I can't imagine it being that much different than surfing the web, watching a few clips, etc. (what I would consider heavy use).... so based on my previous numbers, there would be NO WAY I could achieve the rated near 6 hours of talk time.

I am 98% business user, so wifi is on all the time, push email to 5 accounts, sync always on, bluetooth always on for my earpiece, and various webservices I have to check in on frequently throughout the day. I do not play games on my phone, but I do enjoy tinkering with the settings and flipping through homescreens etc. often.

After this fix, not only have I not experienced any shutdowns, but my phone seems more responsive and my battery life has shot up at least 2 to 3 fold easy. As I write this, my phone has been unplugged for 2 hours 52 minutes, I've read multiple emails, responded to multiple emails, texted back and forth with my daughters about 20 times, made several phone calls and checked Facebook.... and my meter is at 95%. It also stayed at 100% battery level for nearly 1.5 hours, and I no longer jump from 100 to 98% as soon as I unplug the battery. This has been consistent for nearly 4 days now.

Here is my best guess... somewhere along the manufacturing line and shipping, along with storage, there's an extra oxidative film on the terminals to the battery. I do not know if it's on the battery side or the phone side, but something is there... maybe a bad batch of gold terminals, who knows. I imagine the sleep setting uses such a specific and minute amount of energy that any resistance on these terminals causes this phone, and probably many others, to get confused.... just like it does on many cars' electrical sensors (of which the fix was exactly the same BTW on my erratic Jag).

So, turn off your phone, pop out the battery, get a q-tip out and dip it lightly in rubbing alcohol. Carefully rub the three gold connectors to the battery (on the phone side), and also do the three terminals on the battery. AFTER you've done that, take a white pencil eraser and LIGHTLY rub the gold surfaces to remove any oxidation. It doesn't matter if it looks shiny and clean already, we're talking about such a specific low energy requirement, so any resistance can cause havoc.

Let dry, put battery back in, and I would be very surprised if this doesn't fix your shutdown issues and battery life woes if those issues happen to be the same as mine.

First, welcome!

Thank you for your deliberate, informative first post. Your stated solution has the distinct advantage of being a good idea under any circumstance and, concurrently, being a possible "fix" for the random shutdown problem. I'm going to clean my device and battery contacts (although I haven't had the shutdown problem with my latest Captivate) and am very much looking forward to forum members reporting back regarding their personal experiences after heeding your Q-Tip, alcohol, eraser suggestion. The concept, of course, has been successfully utilized over the decades with PC add-on card contacts so...why not with the Captivate?

good suggestion by myRTTech, this had worked for my old Pronto remote control on another problem. But unfortunately this DOES NOT work for my Captivate. I was hoping it will, alas back to relying on Captivate Keep Alive...
