Help Phone Shutting off randomly?

I don't know if I'm that member but I got mine in December and 0 shut downs so far, made it 220+ hours before I manually turned it off because it was going slow (though it was actually my internet that was slow not the phone), right now sitting on 120 hours. With out CKA set to like 65% I don't think I ever made it past 48 on my old captivate.

I use CKA on my phone and it's set to 90% cut off. As least on my phone, as long as I have it at 90% or less, the phone works correctly. And even with CKA, my battery seems to last a long time. I don't use the phone as my music player or surf the web non-stop, but I do use it fairly often for text messages and email throughout the day. After a 15 hours workday, my battery still shows in the mid 70 to 60% remaining capacity. One day after a particularly heavy use with combined phone calls/Google Mapping/emails back and forth the battery capacity remaining dropped to 40% but that was still after like 15 hours of use. I'm pretty happy with my battery life so far even with CKA. I also recharge the phone back every night to 100% before I disconnect in the morning.

I had placed this post earlier...

"The volume setting for NOTIFICATION resets on its own back to default level of about 30% after receiving text messages. I haven't been able to confirm how many text messages received triggers the volume to drop back to 30%. I did notice that if I check my data usage by sending *3282# (send) then the volume drops back to 30% from 100%."

I've done numerous tests in regards to the volume dropping back to default setting on text messages and discovered that on my phone, if I do the *3282# (*DATA#) SEND to check my data usage, the volume auto resets to default level of about 30%. I checked the setting for notification volume and it was back on 30%. I raised it back to 100%, then did the *DATA# and the volume dropped back to 30% on its own. This only happens if I do the data check and *646# (*MIN#). Anyone else have the same issue? Its not a deal breaker, but it's annoying because I need the notification volume up all the way and have to readjust the notification volume level after I check my data usage throughout the month.

If I could have gotten away with CKA at 90% I would have kept my first phone (the GPS worked better than on this one), but for me I set it at 95% then it turned off at 92. I set it at 85% and it turned off at 83 etc. etc. and it took until CKA was on all the way to 65% that the phone would stay on.

Called T&T today about my wife's phone. their warranty department told me to get the phone "repaired" by manufacturer. i was put on conference call ith Samsung support.
I was told that they don't have replacement phones. i ahve send my phone to them. then they will test it and repair it.
ATT agent feels I should get new phone but Samsung does not. i told Samsung that they know about this issue, and why not stand behind their product and replace defective phones with new ones and full warranty.
How about class action and or BBB?
This is outrage.

You are right there why should we have to have a referb phone and not a new one. We are paying for them why should we not get a new phone it aint our fault they carnt sort there own proplems out,, But we are the ones that get the referb phones back. When all the proplems that are on this forum are because the tech support carnt even sort it out but they wont our money fast enough for there products...

Still good here, no shutdowns with replaced device after .. however long (11 days maybe). When will we get the 2.2 update for crying out loud? Why are US carriers the last to get them? I guess there is some reason.

little update. Last night went o local store which happened to have DSC. After informing that phone is shutting down, lady popped cover to check moisture label and infomed me that replacement phone will come to directly to house via 1-2 business days piority shipping because.........they ran out of replacement phones. I asked about warranty..... "Your phone is covered until 1 year from original day of purchase."
This is completely different handling of customer/consumer than what I was told over the phone. Initailly was was infomed that i have to ship phone to Samsung and they will repair my phone and maybe 2 weeks later get it back. I will post IMEI number (partial) of replacement

I put my phone up in my bay window one night, checked it a few hours later, and it was the first time it had ever turned off and the phone was freezing cold. I'm in NY, and don't judge, but I cannot sleep without my AC fan on so it gets cold in my room. When I charge it in my room when I go to sleep, its fine as long as it is charging, but in the middle of the night I unplug it when it is done. Pretty much in fear I will mess it up by keeping it plugged in for no reason. If I leave the phone out, it randomly shuts off. I don't know if it is because it gets cold. But if I place it under my pillow most of the time it stays on. Also if I am outside and it is in my pocket, it turns off a lot. But needless to say it shuts off just sitting in a room temperature room, so I don't know. Maybe that first initial time I let it get freezing cold I messed it up?? I've never dropped it and it has one of the snug like cases on it. it isn't a hard case, but kinda rubbery plastic. I also follow this thread, and my phone isn't rooted and was manufactured before November. Just wondering maybe the cold does it??

It is weird them running out of replacement phones, though we can only speculate as to the cause ... it could be something unrelated. Mine is still good, now at 11-12 days. NO CKA, No nothing. It just works. I am so happy. I mean, it makes a huge difference (obviously). I can actually rely on it as an alarm clock.

UPDATE: Also, I second the comment below -- cold temperatures have nothing to do with anything.

BayBeeGirl,

My phone had never been subjected to cold temperatures and it used to shut off on its own. In fact, I carry my phone in a phone pouch attached to my belt, under a shirt or jacket and it's nice and warm when I remove it from the pouch to make calls. It's a total random thing that just happens to occur on a lot of early production phones. Your options is to use CKA app (and it still may shutdown) or if you're within the 30 days return policy from AT&T (or whomever you bought the phone from), then do an out-right replacement with a new recently manufactured phone. If you're outside the 30 days return policy from AT&T (or whomever you bought the phone from) you could take it to a service center and request a swap with another unit. AT&T is aware of the powering off issue with the Captivate phones.

my other phone switched off for the second time after about 200 hours. Due to snow Fedex did not delivere my wife's phone. Ifthat replacement doesn't shut down then i will request another replacement. I am suspecting that Samsung had issue with soldering since phones shut down mostly when cold.

I saw a posting by Juno Reactor at Samsung Galaxy S - Phone Randomly Shuts Off

"Just keep your eyes on your task manager, and check how much RAM your phone is running. If RAM is above 275MB, your phone is likely to shut off twice or more per day. BTW, normal RAM should run around 250MB or less. Don't worry, this is common problem with any smartphones."

This advice worked for me. My Galaxy S turned itself off five nights in a row. This is NOT OK with me, since I use the alarms. A phone should not turn itself off ever, assuming the battery is not exhausted, IMHO. But I have had no problem the past two nights. I installed Android Task Manager and killed (pardon the language) many programs running in the background to free up about 100 MB of RAM (I am afraid to kill some tasks that look important). The Galaxy with 2.1 seems to have 328 MB available in some sense, so I got down to roughly 238.

I was not running that many apps, so I am surprised RAM is so easily used up. I am doing experiments to learn more. Many tasks running are things that came installed with the phone and that I never use. A few minutes after booting 2.5 hours ago, Android Task manager told me I had 127.84 MB free. Now, it says 97.48 MB free. That's distressing. I have done nothing with the phone in that time. I'll stop many tasks before going to sleep. I shouldn't have to do this, of course.

Are there any known apps/combo of apps that cause shutdowns? Given I never had a problem for a month or more, I'm hesitant to consider getting a new phone (which, will likely be an older one than mine, just refurbished). That said? The damn thing shut down and didn't wake me this AM, and has already since shut down one more.

I could uninstall apps, and even do a hard reset if necessary, but ... naturally, I don't want to. LOL. I'd love to not have to completely reconfigure the phone and all. I wish the app list showed me which apps I added most recently, so I could maybe start by removing those. :(

just got 'refurbished" phone..... it is not marked anywhere 'refurb" ad is older than current phone. tomorrow, I am going back to ATT DSC and request newer device. I have no more time to play around with this nonsense.

Hello everyone.

jcollake and I have had conversation thread here regarding whether Samsung would upgrade our Captivate phones to 2.2 and I basically stated that I believed Samsung will NOT upgrade our phones because they don't want to cannibalize sales of new models with the 2.2 or 2.3 installed. Having said that, here's an article regarding Samsung blocking OTA updates on T-mobile so that their new models are sold and existing models are kept at 2.1.

but T-mobile issue is around 4G. I don't care about 2.2 but a phone that doesn't switch off. My wife has enough of this, she missed bunch of important calls. She is already asking for different phone but we are stuck to damn Captivate due to contract.

a2gtinut, AT&T is aware of the defect. Call them and demand a switch to another phone. Remind them that you're stuck in THEIR contract but they have failed to provide a non-defective phone. They could be held liable for breach of contract for failing to provide a reliable device since they are forcing you to USE THEIR NETWORK AND SERVICE under their contract. Also, the T-Mobile OTA block by Samsung is more than 4G connectivity issue. Samsung doesn't want the existing devices to upgrade to 2.2 because 2.2 will allow the existing phones to have additional functionality and because 2.2 is better optimized, the existing phones will perform better. Samsung realizes that allowing existing customers to get newer functionality and performance would reduce the number of sales on the newer models because if your phone already is working very well with the newest update, why would you ditch it and buy the newer model?

Its all about sales. Samsung wants to sell new devices. They aren't interested in providing free upgrades to existing phones. In other words, Captivate phones will be stuck at 2.1.

Ignore what I said in message #589. I did not fix the problem. My phone
turned itself off last night, and again this morning.

rmw, I had the same problem. Tried many things looking for solutions, one day it would work and I thought I found a perfect solution but 1 day later it would switch off again. I really think the best thing is to go and exchange it . I didnt get a new one, but at least my alarm goes off in the morning because it doesnt shut off. Its not a thing of "I put it in the microwave for a minute and it hasnt shut off in 10hrs!!".
I went to ATT repair center and they exchanged it in 5min.

15 days and counting here after replacement and hasn't shut down a single time

Still good here too (15 days too).

I mentioned, but then deleted, that the older phone had one of the 3 battery prongs slightly out of alignment (a manufacturing defect). I removed the comment because it seems unlikely this is the cause, as it surely still made fine contact with the battery. Still, it is the only difference I've seen.

Wow, that is not cool. I may have to concede that I underestimated corporate greed (and I don't have high opinions of corporations to start with, as they are purely profit driven and rarely care about customer retention).
