Help Phone Shutting off randomly?

Just use the Odin one click to return it to factory defaults, I returned my first Captivate on Wednesday after using this process. My original device was totally rooted, running Unleash the Beast and the battery's icon was custom. It worked and I am sending this from my two day old new and rooted and totally pimped Captivate. I have another 30 day window for exchange so if this one starts to act up I'll swap it too. Once a month if i have to until they update the software for the buggies.

I've actually tried to use Odin before, for some reason no luck... is it cuz im on a Mac using bootcamp

This is a long shot, but my phone started doing this after I messed around with a task killer. I found that if I didn't put the "clock" app in the ignore list, the phone would shut itself off if the task killer killed the clock app automatically. If you don't have the clock app on the ignore list, put it on there and see if it makes a difference.

And I am referring to the stock android clock app here, not an alarm clock (which is also a good idea to ignore, for obvious reasons).

Hope that helps.

My phone shuts off when I am connected to wifi. If I turn off wifi, it does not shut off. Has anyone else tried turning off their wifi to see if that solves the problem?

Mine shut off yesterday while on a bike ride, using MapMyRide/GPS to track my ride along with doubletwist. My phone is somewhat new (3 days old), not rooted, and I noticed it shut down during my ride because the music shut off. I thought I might have drained my battery completely. When I got home I plugged it into the charger (thinking I had drained the battery) and i received no display at all still. Buttons didn't function. I finally removed my battery, reinstalled, powered on (no charger connected), and after boot I still had 36% battery left. So it died and wasn't due to running out of juice. Not sure if that helps.

Sorry to sound negative, but this "feature" doesn't necessarily appear soon after you get your phone. It could take a week or two.

Now the good news. Not everyone suffers from this, so I hope your current device is not one that's possessed.

how many have you rooted?

The only 2 I've had. The one I got last Wednesday has had not a single random shutdown. I am using Launcher Pro and love it! I do notice a slight lag which I didn't have on the first phone, however, I can deal with a slight lag over the shutdowns. I will not apply any of the lagfixes because I am already running Unleash The Beast and the cool battery icon replacing the awful stock one and I don't want to do too much to the phone and have things start conflicting and crashing. I love the phone and I am enjoying customizing it. I read these forums and XDA everyday and I am still learning a lot. I love this phone and I believe that a lot of the issues we are experiencing will be corrected once we get the Froyo update.

Not true, my first phone shutdown from day one, every phone I've ever owned has done this on occasion, this was becoming very frequent and once it happenned 4 times in 24 hrs, I unrooted using Odin and returned it.

I have a rooted phone with TouchWiz which has not rebooted once. Right now it shows Up Time = 340 hours (before that I rebooted it myself from time to time as I was playing with it).

No real resolution yet? My phone is tarting to randomly shut down for the past couple of days. I noticed it for the first time a day or two after I received the phone but I didn't pay attention to it. Starting this week, it now shuts down multiple times during the day.
I rooted my phone and run launcher pro. Last week I deleted a bunch of apps that I thought were unnecessary: ATK,SetCPU, beautiful widgets, juice defender, wordfeud.
This week (once I started having issues) I deleted more apps, (adobe reader, facebook, twitter, marca.com) thinking the apps could be the issue. I rely on the phone as my only alarm clock and I can't afford having it shut down.
I'm going to unroot my phone and reset back to stock hoping to get it fixed. Returning it is not an option anymore as the 30 days have already passed.

No real resolution yet?

Nope. My current unit has been fine for almost two weeks since the exchange. As I wrote above, the shutdowns don't necessarily occur right away. Could happen days / weeks later. I've done six things differently, but have no idea if one or more of these actions have helped.

1. No JuiceDefender installed (was in previous phone).
2. No Advanced Task Killer installed (was in previous phone).
3. No LauncherPro (was in previous phone).
4. Wi-Fi is always on and is set to never sleep.
5. Power saving mode is not checked.
6. I never let the phone go into sleep mode after a set period of time. I always push the button to get it to sleep just in case the built-in sleep timer thinks that "sleep" and "coma" are synonymous.

Regarding items 1, 2 and 3, I am in no way casting doubt on the stability or effectiveness of these programs. Just tweaking my phone's environment as a test.

One or more (or none) of these tweaks could be avoiding shutdowns...or my device is simply not suffering from a flaw common to other phones. Yet. Time will tell.

P.S. Phone is rooted and unlocked.

Thanks Jack for the thorough reply. More and more I'm thinking it has to do with LauncherPro. I'll delete it first and see how it goes (I love the program other than that). If running simply touchwiz works and don't need to set the phone back to stock.

At least in my case, the shutoffs aren't (weren't) related to any software, it was a problem with the phone itself. All three phones had the same apps installed, but the third phone has never shut off (I've had it over three weeks now). LauncherPro certainly wasn't the problem, as I've been running it on all three phones.

Does it have anything to do with the phone overheating? Kind of like computers shutting themselves off once they reach a temperature threshold.

I just got yesterday afternoon and noticed it started to just randomly turn off while in my pocket. But after reading this I'm beginning to wonder if it has anything to do with the advance task killer application installed.

I have advanced task killer installed on mine. Do you guys who have problems with this have that app installed?
Mine has been shutting off by itself for some time, even before I installed an Advanced Task Killer. Don't think it has anyting to do with the app.

I think we can agree by now that it's not related to software downloaded from the Market. Each potential culprit has been ruled out, in addition to the fact that it's been happening with stock phones. That leaves us with pre-installed software, system settings, a bad batch of RAM or some other hardware issue that is not universally defective.

I've had my replacement for almost two weeks without a shutdown. My settings are as follows:

1. Wi-Fi is always on and is set to never sleep. The "never sleep" settings can be accessed via the Wi-Fi settings page menu, Advanced tab at the bottom. Reason: I'm attempting to generate additional under-the-cover activity (plus I do use Wi-Fi). As I'm not a technician, this may be nonsense.

2. Power saving mode is not checked. Reason: "Don't do me any favors, Captivate. Your idea of power saving may get out of hand."

3. I never let the phone go into sleep mode on its own. Default is 30 minutes, but I always push the button to get it to sleep. Reason: Just in case the built-in sleep timer thinks that "sleep" and "coma" are synonymous.

You can try these three mods to see if they work for you. I'm not saying that these settings will for sure fix the issue, but rather letting you know what's been effective for me...so far.

Bottom line - I'm offering a no-lose proposition. Beats the hell out of another "me, too" post.
