Phone slow after root

So my phone has seemed really laggy since I rooted. Everything jitters and apps freeze sometimes. A reboot seems to fix it, but if I start doing some high intense stuff it just gets laggy and the only thing that fixes it is another reboot.
Are there any fixes to this?
I was reading this article:High "Android System" Usage

Assuming your rooted, it's there. Look more carefully. To rename it you have to tell ES to mount system as r/w.

root only permits access to the system. it is what you've let get access to the system that might be holding you up. you need to figure out what you've done, and then undo it.

fwiw, the gnex is NOT capable of intense activity. it is an old device that simply cannot keep up with many newer apps. don't get me wrong, i love the device, but it has its limitations.

Total guess but do you have show hidden files enabled in ES?

P.s, have you made a nandroid backup before changing things?
