Phone slow with music

I've experienced this with both the stock 1.6 and cyanogenmod 5.0.8.

Whenever I play music, the rest of the phone is deathly slow. Even basic text messaging. Is this normal for the MyTouch?

do you have a lot of widgets? Widgets use ram, so try not to have many. also do you have a task killer?

Only widgets are the weather one, calendar and the wifi/bluetooth/brightness one.

Never used a task killer
