Help Phone storage is full! Delete some files to free space.

Another thing I've noticed getting really large is "Dialer Storage". Took a while to figure out what that was, because my call log alone shouldn't take up 16 megabytes of space. Turns out that's where it stores MMS and SMS messages. Now, I use an app called "Delete Old Messages" to clean up messages older than a month, BUT... it never deletes any MMS messages! Sure enough, I went into my messaging app and started manually deleting old MMS messages, and the size of "Dialer Storage" started dropping.
 
I have gone through app by app and cleared all the caches. Deleted the email account, rebooted and data is still there. No folder showing me downloaded data, no way of clearing data from email..and data just keeps getting bigger.
 
Mine's the same way. I not only deleted unread mail, but emptied the sent, trash, and any other folders that existed. Deleting Angry Birds removed the warning, but obviously that's just a temporary fix as my mail storage keeps climbing regardless of how much mail storage I'm actually using...

Will check out K9 Mail... can't believe that in the world of "thousands of apps" my phone can only have one or two small ones installed before it just shuts down basic functionality!
 
Wow thanks guys, I was having the problem of getting the Low Storage notification even though I still had memory on my phone so I tried clearing the data com.htc.socialnetwork.provider and it fixed that problem. On top of that, my Gmail app hasn't been receiving any emails and I was wondering what was wrong with that but clearing the data also fixed this.
 
Okay, so I have a theory now, why my HTC Mail client shows 74MB of storage, even though there are only 3 messages in the inbox, and all other folders are empty...

I get several emails per day from my office phone system, with wav attachments of voicemail messages. I suspect those attachments aren't getting deleted after playing them in the media player. Any idea how to find where they may be hiding and get rid of them?
 
Deleting Flash took away the message but, you need Flash. Have you tried to reinstall Flash? I removed Flash, it did not take away the message and I cannot reinstall it either now.

Go into the installed applications, and look for one that says com.htc.socialnetwork.providers, and hit clear data...that did the trick for me, not sure what it'll do for you

I gave this a shot and it FORCE CLOSES on me.. My phone keeps giving me this message and I have deleted Apps.. Cleared Emails and Still it is telling me this if full.. What do I do now?
 
Ok, so I clear com.htc.socialnetworks.provider all the time, I only use Gmail on my phone, I have Facebook for sense and Tweetcaster. All of the chaches were at 0 and I was still getting the Low Space message. I uninstalled Dolphin HD browser and it went away. Any explanation? Available storage was saying around 15MB before getting rid of Dolphin. Now says 21.82 MB. Makes no sense to me.

That's a pretty low amount of free memory for just those few apps. If you go into settings->applications->manage applications, let it refresh, press menu and choose sort by size, what are the sizes of the largest apps?

I haven't used Dolphin HD in a while - I do know that the original Dolphin allows you to set the cache to be on the SD card. Does Dolphin HD allow that? If it did, that's what I would do. It sounds like when you uninstalled Dolphin HD that you freed up quite a bit of space - perhaps that was all browser cache?
 
I know I am going to sound very elementary about this question, but here it goes...how do you remove some apps? I am trying to figure out how to give my internal memory more space, but I don't know how to remove any apps...can you help me? Thanks

You can uninstall any apps that you installed from the market by going to the market, pressing menu, choosing "My apps", and then scroll down to the app which you want to remove. There should be an uninstall button there.

You cannot remove any of the built-in apps, though (gmail, mail, teeter, peep, footprints, Amazon MP3 Store, stocks, etc.), though these apps do not take up any space that would be giving you an out-of-space error message - they are stored in a different location.
 
I got this issue, then I removed applications, cleaned the cache, etc., but I was not able to get rid of this annoying message. When I cleaned the "data" on the "Engine email" application, the message was removed... yestarday I got that message again, and notice that it appeared when I received an email with an attachement of 15Mb, I deleted the email and cleaned the data again, and I got rid of the "Storage Full" messsage again.

Then, I believe that this is related to huge attachments in emails, if you delete the huge email, for some reason the data is still stored in the phone memory, you need to delete the data manually...

I have a problem with my samsung galaxy i5510. I have 173 mb of internal storage space and my apps take only 60mb of the space. But still I have only 35mb left.how the hell is that. I have cleared all cache. But still problem not solved. Any ideas. Pls help.
 
I am getting the message that my phone storage is full! Not even "low" anymore. Can't do much of anything with it. Cleared cache, have nine apps. What more?? Not sure how to clear the mail things that are still in my internal memory. Please help! Can't afford a new phone yet!

Settings->applications->manage applications

Let the list refresh.

Choose menu->sort by size.

What are your largest apps? How many MBs are they storing?

You mention the mail app, which I believe is notorious for taking a huge amount of storage.

I deleted a couple of semi-useless (but fun, darn it) apps, and cleared cache and data for a few others, and I seem to be okay -- for the moment. A lot of my memory seems to be storing sms and mms messages as well as call logs. I could clear all messages and calls, but I actually need to keep the last 30-45 days' worth of messages and calls; anything older than that I can do without. Are there any apps out there that will allow me to do this? Thanks!

For SMS and MMS messages, Delete Old Messages can do exactly that for free. https://market.android.com/details?id=uk.co.jads.android.smsdelete&feature=more_from_developer

And Message Cleanup from the same developer can be set to automatically reduce the message store based on your criteria, though you do need to run it after each reboot (in my experience.) https://market.android.com/details?id=uk.co.jads.android.messagecleanup&feature=search_result

Even better, if you have a Gmail account, is an app called SMS Backup+ (free) which will copy messages that you receive (and send) as they are received to a label in your gmail account. Very handy for searching through old text messages. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&feature=search_result (I think it can archive your call logs as well.)

For call logs, Call Log Trimmer can reduce the size of your logs each time that you receive a call. So, for example, you can keep the last 5 calls, etc. https://market.android.com/details?id=jp.joao.android.CallLogTrimmer&feature=search_result

I've tried all of the suggestions above and done everything short of deleting my gmail account, only because I'm not at all convinced this will actually work. I've had the phone a week, and haven't downloaded more than a handful of apps. Does anyone have any suggestions? Otherwise, I'm heading back to the Sprint store on Monday!

Since you mention Sprint, I assume that you do not have an Eris - this is an Eris forum.

That said, if it is an HTC sense phone, I believe that you cannot even go into settings->applications->manage applications->mail and wipe data, as there is no clear data button there. Frustrating.

So I think that way forward is to start over from scratch (do a factory reset) and use the free K9 mail app rather than using the HTC mail app.

If this is not an HTC phone, then perhaps ask on the appropriate forum here at androidforums.com.
