Help Phone storage vs card storage

So this is my first phone with a significant amount of storage on both the phone and on SD. Does anyone have suggestions or perhaps pitfalls I need to avoid when choosing where to store certain files? I imagine the system uses the phone storage for just about everything? So should I just plan on using the SD for all media like music/vids/pics? Any performance considerations?

This phone is so fast that I don't notice any lag when, say, the Music app is loading files from the SD card. I also have some of my apps moved to the SD card. Easier to backup to computer from the SD card (unless I'm missing something, i.e. backing up all of the SD card is better than backing up all of the phone memory).

It is my personal preference to use the SD for pretty much anything i can. Media, downloaded files, apps, pretty much anything.

I had the DX with a 16gb card in it and i never filled it up......i got close but never completely.

I use the SD card for all files (mp3's, pics, video, back-ups). I use the phone storage for everything else.

Coming from the DINC i was very concerned with "low phone storage" so when I got my Rezound the first thing i did was put all my apps on my SD card. I soon found that a few of my apps didn't work on the SD card so I factory reset and started from scratch. There's so much memory on the phone that I'm not concerned with apps anymore. And since this phone won't have the same issue with the "low phone storage" as the DINC had than it was a no brainer for me.

Use all files for external sd card. I listen to music everyday on my phone and have about 16gb of music stored on the card. There is no way im putting all of that on my phone storage lol. :D

The way I look at it is with respect to convenience and also in recovering from a problem. If you need to wipe the phone I think it is better to have important stuff on the sd card. However, I have played around with this and it seems very easy to get individual files off the partitioned memory in case of trouble before a hard reset.

So maybe the best approach is to segregate files by use types so they are consistent and keep the more permanent ones like contacts on the partitioned memory and music and photos on the sd card. Also don't forget to back-up really important stuff onto your computer. At least that is what I am going to do as of now.

Can you please post a brief tutorial on which directories on the phone are important to backup and what data they contain? Thanks.

I store everything on my MicroSD it's the Class 4 32gb I got with my Thunderbolt . It's got about 8-10gigs of room left .

I use to notice on my incredible it was faster when it was stored on the phone compared to the card but I dont' notice a diffrence on the Rezound the phone is flat out fast

The second (H:\) is called HTC STORAGE and appears to be the active usable memory on the phone that holds all the active files and appears to be the default storage area used by the phone for apps and added files.
I have looked at all three drives and it didn't appear to me that, given all the apps I have installed, that the HTC STORAGE drive has all the apps and their data. My expectation is that HTC wouldn't make access to those files that easy to avoid a plethora of calls to Customer Service from people who inadvertently wiped out their phone apps and data. I'll look again.

Thanks for the in depth instructions. I knew about the process for getting access to the drives. I was just wondering which specific folders on the phone contain the apps and data so I could backup and restore just those folders.

Thornev, I understand.

I haven't gone into too much detail on looking at this. At first glance I see several database files scattered around but in looking at them in notepad++ I could not make out much about their content. I was looking mostly for my contact list. So far all the apps (only 4) I have not been able to find nor my contact list. Since I could have put my music on the free main storage partition it appears that there is some user flexibility. I copied all the stuff to my computer only to be safe while I still learn and play around with this. I'll post something when I learn a bit more right now I'm just a lost wanderer in the dark ;)

Let us know where you find things.

How do you make the Rezound only (or primarily) use the SD card instead of the phone's memory?
Well there are 2 answers. One answer is to move your apps to the SD card: Home > Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage applications > select an app > press "Move to SD card" if button is available (not all apps can be run from the SD card).

Another method (kind of the same method, page 204 of the manual) is Home > Settings > SD & phone storage > scroll down to Internal storage > select Make more space > select either option > click Next > select Move apps to SD card > select the apps you want to move.

I thought there was an option to set to download apps directly to the SD card, but I can't find it.

By the way, a tip... I keep my Rezound running snappy by clearing out storage often. I use Advanced Task Manager Pro and select all non-essential apps to be "killed" in one shot. Usually leaves me about 398MB.

With my OG Droid, I had an interesting experience in the subway once, where I was having issues accessing my MP3's from the storage card, so I dismounted it. When I went to re-mount, it appeared that the phone for some reason needed to contact Verizon and/or Google, so with no signal underground I was unable to use any of the apps that I had on the card (their icons had all gone to the default android picture, and none of them would launch), and I couldn't access any of my media files. As soon as I left the train station and was outside with a renewed signal, I dismounted and remounted again and everything was back to normal.

I don't know if this is expected behavior or not, but it was/is reason for me not to want to put any apps on the card any longer, if I can avoid it. Oh, and I haven't tested this with the Rezound, based on how frustrating it was (not to mention the fair amount of panic I went through).

*shrugs*
