Help Phone stuck in boot-up cycle - help!

loubylou

Lurker
I just installed the latest version of the OS for my phone type. It powered off while it did it, but now is stuck in a loop of trying to restart and alternately showing the HTC screen and the '3' screen (my network provider).

I've tried turning it off, but it wouldn't, so I took the battery out and out it back in but it's doing the same, just stuck in a loop of flicking between the two screens and not going into the phone set up.

Any ideas as it's totally stuck at the mo?

Cheers

How exactly did you apply the update? Any information about what the phone was running before and what you did will help identify a solution

Thanks for replying.

I had the usual low storage issue and wanted to update the OS as it had been asking me for ages and I never had enough space. I uninstalled updates of flash player and the play store in order to get enough MBs.

Then I did a manual search for OS update by going to - Menu, Settings, About phone, System software updates and clicked the "Check now" and installed it from there. (I was on 2.2 before)

I left it to do it's own thing. It said that i'd not be able to make calls while it installed and after installing it powered itself down, then eventually back on again right into this loop.

Any ideas?

Cheers.

I take it you are not rooted? So just a regular Over The Air update and it broke the phone.

That does happen actually. Try pulling the battery out while the phone is trying to run, and leaving it out for a few minutes. Sometimes this is enough.

If not, there are 3 things I can think of, but all will lose your data.

1) boot while pressing the volume down key. From the menu on the white screen select "recovery". Then try to do a factory reset from recovery. May fix it.

2) when I'm on a computer rather than the phone I'll try to find a link to a recent 3 RUU. This is a program that will reflash the phone with a new set of software. This will fix it.

3) Take it to 3 and tell them that their update broke the phone and they have to fix it.

If you are not rooted I that's all I can think of.

The bad news is that the update would have been very minor anyway - either a small OS patch or new network bloatware.

Thanks so much for the tips. And yes, its not rooted, so just a regular update.

If I do a factory reset will I lose all my contacts, pix and other data held in apps on the phone?

Thanks again.

A factory reset will wipe contacts, apps and their data, though as long as pics are on the SD card they will be fine. If contacts are stored as Google contacts they are synced with your gmail, in which case they will be OK too. You can check by logging into GMail from a web browser, then clicking on the red word "GMail" and selecting "Contacts". If they aren't though there's not much you can do at this point.

The problem is that all 3 of those options I outlined will wipe the phone. If the battery pull + couple of minutes to discharge doesn't do it I don't actually know any way of saving your data.

The most recent 3 RUU (ROM Upgrade Utility) I can find is this one: RUU_Bravo_Froyo_H3G_UK_2.25.771.1_Radio_32.48.00.32U_5.11.05.14_release_149217_signed.exe.
It's a windows program, so you download it to a PC, boot the phone while pressing the "back" buttton (to get into "fastboot" mode), connect phone to PC via USB and run the RUU. It completely replaces the software on the phone. The process also wipes the phone.

If you take it to 3 that's probably what they'll do, except they might have a slightly more recent one, and it will tell them that their updates are breaking phones.

Sorry I don't have anything better to offer.
