Help Phone tries to connect EVDO RevB

quikah

Lurker
I have been having a problem with my phone trying to connect with EVDO RevB then failing and falling back to 1xrtt (pretty sure Sprint/VM doesn't use RevB ). I have an old OV that can connect EVDO RevA at the same place. This happens a lot around certain areas, but not others.

I can connect with Rev A very reliably in some places.

Phone is stock and otherwise trouble free. Any ideas?

I'm having the exact same problem with my Awe. In the city where I live and work, the phone shows it tries to connect with EVDO Rev B, but as soon as any data transfer is attempted, it drops down to 1xRTT.

In the next town over, I found an area where the phone connects with EVDO Rev A, and that works fine.

I called Virgin Mobile tech support a half-dozen times, and every time they eventually give up and claim to open a ticket with Sprint. I did get one support tech who arranged to have a replacement Awe sent out, but it had the exact same problem.

The 1x speeds are driving me crazy!

Yeah, getting tired of it, thinking about jumping ship to tmobile. I am in SF Bay area BTW. When I went to Kansas City to visit my parents for a week I never had this problem, always had a good data connection. Seems like something is messed up with Sprint towers in this area.

These are probably basic steps you've tried already, but have you done a profile update and tried re-activating the phone? Another possibility is getting Virgin Mobile to reprovision your account - but I've only had success getting someone from their social media team to do that (Facebook/Twitter).

It could also be due to local tower problems, especially since it doesn't happen everywhere. In that case there isn't much to do other than continue to complain and wait it out if you're willing. The good news is that, upon request, Virgin Mobile does give account credit for documented service issues. So, if you're not going to switch, be persistent about problems you're having. It does pay off in the long run :)

I'm also in the SF Bay Area (east bay, tri-valley). I see the Rev B connection all around San Ramon. But from recent tests I've done in Pleasanton, San Jose, and Monterey, the phone shows Rev A in those locations and data speeds are good.

Thanks for the ideas, aml1025. When I called customer support, they claimed they were reprovisioning my account, but I think I'll now try the social media team, too.

I had the same issue with this phone, it only ever tried to connect revb. the data speed would never get better then 0.14 mb/s. I have been on the phone with tech support and the social media team. Re-provisioning of my account did nothing either.

The Social Media team insists this is because of upgrades happening in my area, and they have no estimate of when they will be completed.

To me, this sounds a lot like the way they initially kept telling me to wait 4 hours and call back if the problem wasn't corrected (it's just a way to try to get me to hold on a bit longer).

I think I'm headed to T-Mobile.

would a custom rom help with this issue? Is there possibly a setting in the phone somewhere that is telling it to try to connect REVB instead of A.

I too have this problem since i activated my phone on March 28. But here's the twist: I traveled to Las Vegas this past weekend and the 3g worked perfectly. Common speeds of .5 to 2.5Mb. Even took a road trip to SoCal and it worked fine in the Anaheim area as well. I have another open ticket with VM's network team and am awaiting an answer. I will keep this thread updated.

So this appears to be a location related issue with this model. I guess this is why some people have no problems and some do.

I'm in a Chicago suburb.
