Help Phone turns off when I do practically anything now

coldjeanz

Lurker
For the last few months my phone would start shutting down if I used the internet or the camera. Now gradually it's gotten worse, if I leave the messages screen open for a few minutes it will shut the phone down. When I turn the phone back on it will either shut down immediately after, or it might turn back on and the battery will be completely drained (even after charging it to full), or the battery might be back to the level it was originally at.

Basically my phone is becoming more and more unusable by the day. I did a factory reset yesterday and while that made me phone run so much smoother it appears it didn't help fix this problem.

My initial guess was that the phone was overheating (it was quite laggy as well) but now I'm starting to fear the battery is just gone. However this doesn't make sense because my dad and brother also got the exact same phone at the same time I did (summer of 2010) and they don't have this problem. And it bugs me because I have taken much better care of my phone than them.

What else can I do at this point?

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!

battery life is dependent on different circumstances so not all battery life will be the same, unfortunately. there are too many variables that can cause the battery to work harder or less hard then on other phones. so it sounds like you just need to get a new battery. batteries are cheap these days. i bought this one for mine:HTC Standard Battery for HTC EVO 4G

That battery looks to be getting horrible reviews from buyers. How much do the batteries usually run or is that price about standard for the Evo 4G?

Doing these two things should have your phone back to normal: 1) Get a new replacement battery (preferably the original) 2) Reset the device before inserting the new battery. If the problem still persist _ then you might need to replace or upgrade to a different model.

Best of luck. <(@ ̄︶ ̄@)>

Something just hit me right now and I'm hoping I'm right.

I charge my phone by plugging into a surge protector. I'm the only one who does this in my family and the only one experiencing a problem! So my hypothesis is that there isn't sufficient current being supplied to the phone.

I just charged my phone using a wall outlet for about 45 minutes, I'm using the camera, internet, games, etc and it hasn't shut down yet. I'm not ready to conclude anything yet but it's looking good so far.

hmm..interesting, and you are using the same charging cord?
Perhaps a dead outlet on the surge protector or just a bad surge protector.
Either way, you may be right and no cost to you! ('cept maybe a surge protector:p)

Yeah I will probably have to run a few tests to see what is the source of the problem. It could either be the surge protector, the wall outlet that the protector is plugged into, or possibly my charger itself.

I used my dad's charger and plugged into the same wall outlet that he uses and everything seemed to be okay even with minimal charging. So now I'm charging again except using another outlet in my room and using my charger. If the phone starts shutting down again then I might be inclined to believe it's the charger that is the problem.
