They only blacklist phones they receive back.
That doesn't make sense, unless they throw away the ones they get back. If they repair them and resell them then they wouldn't blacklist the ones they get back.

The ESN for your broken one is going to be blacklisted by asurion as soon as you activate the new one. So it wont be able to be activated on another account even if you manage to fix it. I would suggest just sending it back and keeping your $30.

only thing about keeping it to sell/ use... A lot of times lost/stolen/broken phone ESNs are put on a list so they can't be activated.
ps. cracked screen is the reason why i went with Black Tie coverage via Best Buy. they cover accidental damage along with water damage, they do not cover lost or stolen (which i am ok with). 0 deductible, but $10/month. and will replace the phone with a brand new one.
