Phone won't ring or get alerts

[slimboutit]

Whenever I'm in area that doesn't get good service I put my phone in Evdo only instead of hybrid, but when I do the phone doesn't ring or and I don't get texts either is it supposed to be like this and is there any way to fix it?

PS: I'm just running stock and not rooted or anything

Messages and calls don't go through the data service. If you turn the phone feature off and just have data, you won't receive any calls.
