Wow, phonedog really doesn't seem to impressed. I have watched several of their videos and usually theirs are pretty fair.

Complicated OS

The OS being complicated blind sided me.

Would love to see those with the device chime in.

Strange initial view:

1. He dings the 5mp camera without testing it out (at least not in writing).
2. He dings the OMAP 4460, but the 4430 at 1.2ghz has already proved a very near equal to the Ex chip and part of the reason Sammy said they went with the 4460 was power management and 4G LTE. Added: Okay, Google said the power management thing, but Sammy said the 4460 was needed to work well with LTE. The latter is probably the key reason.

Even for a first impression, by the way worded- it is superficial.

I'm baffled that he's hung up on the mega pixel hype on phone camera like average Joe and didn't provide any photo test on Gnex. Also strange is that he feels ICS UI is too complicated while other reviewers, even pro Apple one like BGR feel it's nice improvement over GB.

I think this phonearena review is more thorough and objective.

ICS is certainly more complex than GB...but overall, a better software.

The Phonearena review also dings the camera. 5MP or 8MP...the end result is that GN camera just does not measure up.

Dont care for the fixed google bar. What a waste of space.

While I see your point, it compromises real estate that you could have used differently. Let's be fair, Android is Google's OS. Google's business is being, arguably, the best search engine. You can't really blame them for putting their brand on a product they believe is refined, and which they want to represent them and be associated with them. I actually like it on my XOOM, but then again, it doesn't really compromise enough real estate there to bother me :/

I wonder if Phonedog is not the same since Noah Kravitz left.... He knew about Android.

No idea who this new guy is.

aaron from phonedod is really knowledgable. I like him. He's actually gotten more enjoyable since losing weight lol

There are going to be many questions and concerns with this phone. People are already hinting that the OMAP4460 does not have enough power to properly handle the HD screen. This has always been a concern of mine. ICS is definitely not iOS5. Apple does one thing right: makes a stupid user easy OS. No one else has come close to the simplicity.

The delays on this phone are going to push it within weeks of quad core phones and phones that have SoC's that can manage the oomph HD screens need. It is going to be a difficult decision to get this phone or wait for the next.

I think from many of the hands on videos it's safe to say the OMAP4460 does a good job, sure, there's still that occasional lag, but it's Android, what else is new?
Anyway, with ICS, Google put some kind of hardware acceleration especially designed, as far as I see, the OS itself is smoother than Android 2.3

But that's out of the box, I guess we'll need to see what happens when you install many apps and games from the Market and see will Nexus handle it well enough

Anyway, if it DOES lag, I guess I'll just root and overclock it to 1.5Ghz, which is the actual clockspeed, Google underclocked it, probably to safe battery life

Ugh. Aaron killed it for me when he opened the box and we see his fingerprints are already all over the phone.

The review seems a little like the unboxing vid: "at first blush." I mean, in the vid he says how great the headphones are even before he unwraps them from their packaging.

I think he meant that the earphones were better, as in In-ear headphones, not those usual crappy ones, if you look closely, this one is noise isolating

Even so, he sells them as being "pretty nice" as he's unwrapping them. He hasn't even seen them yet, let alone listened to them. I'm just saying, this is a fair unboxing video and first impressions, but nothing that should be relied on as legit review.

(Cut to the earbuds portion of the video at the 3:11 mark.)

The battery seemed to be OK for the short time I had the phone. I did not like the OS and lack of a micro-sd slot! The phone was also bigger than my SG2 and I am not wanting anything bigger. Also a lack of case that I like for this device.

Happy with my trusty GS2

Are you saying you can't remove it?

Here's what I've been able to gather by researching here and there. You can disable the bar in Settings > Apps > All > Google Search. And you are left with a blank space that is there and unusable. And you also lose the ability to do voice searches. On the other hand........

You can use a launcher as most of us to now and customize the space. But, doesn't that defeat the purpose of an unskinned pure Google device?

Other notes, due to the size of the device, removing the bar still leaves you with a 4X4 space underneath, which is the current default now. And, of course, if you root, this becomes a moot issue as ROM developers will I'm sure be able to get around all this.

In totality, I don't like what Google has done here but maybe I'll feel different about it in practice. If any of this is found to be wrong, feel free to correct.

Well, if low light shots is pretty much only thing they dinged Gnex, isn't that pretty good? Even iphone4 is not whole lot better on that. Like I mentioned in other thread, I wouldn't use phone camera in dim lighting.

And regarding GPU/screen thing, OMAP4460 is more than capable of moving HD screen. s3 snapdragon does that in rezound and tegra2 tablets have done that too. So why can't better 4460 do the job?

I do not like the design on HC either, since easier to hit by mistake, consumes more power than capacitive buttons and takes up display space.

Not as much an issue on 10" displays, but even the 7" Acer looks cramp with a nav bar. Unless all future phones ship with bigger displays, the actual usable space and resolution will be less. I expect OEMs to continue using capacitive buttons, since unlike HC, ICS can use capacitive buttons and not show the nav bar.

battery life was super for me over the course of two days usage and me constantly messing around with it. OS wasn't complicated for me what-so-ever. and we've seen camera comparisons to the SGS2 and they're basically equal...
i loved my phone while it was alive. this is why i've ordered a replacement already :)
