Phones with & without a Sims card?

DEE-Z

Newbie
Ive been using a reliable flip phone (non sims card model) for over a decade & Ive pretty much have run out of cosmetic replacement parts so I'm looking at getting a replacement non-data-plan flip phone.
(I dont do any of the social media stuff so the data plan cost isnt justified).
(I dont want a smart phone for my regular phone use either).

All of the newer phones look to use a Sims card now & curious whats the advantage besides being able to use it in multiple phones, can change it for traveling out of the country, saves your contacts & service provider?
If thats the only advantages then its not a necessity to me.

OTHER
I have a HTC-Sense (that doesnt use a sims card) that I used under wifi only to check my email etc & use it like a PDA to read large amounts of word & excel files etc that I put on it).

I currently have my wifes old SamsungS thats replaced the HTC.
(I notice the phone doesnt work when I remove the card, 4G-LTE).
Ive been wanting to root it to remove all the excess junk off of it but never took the time).

Any incite is welcomed.

Im I correct in thats the only reasons to use a Sims card?

Any disadvantages of using a Sims card "besides" someone can steal the card out of your phone (if you happen to leave it unintended)?

Whether or not you require a SIM card depends mostly on your chosen network.

All GSM-based networks e.g AT&T, T-Mobile etc use SIM cards as it's the card that holds the account information (SIM = Subscriber Identity Module)

CDMA-based networks e.g. Sprint, Verizon etc don't use SIM cards for 2G/3G services but (iirc) do require one for 4G. Also devices classed as "world phones" have provision for a SIM card to enable use outside the US.
