Photon or Galaxy S2

The photon had quite a few significant issues; but to their credit the fixes were fairly fast (from what I've read).
-
The nexus s had a very specific 4g issue and my understanding (from what I've read) google fixed it not samsung. Please spare us the follow up about how much samsung sucks we understand your view here and repeating it won't add to the discussion.
-
My view is that if it has an issue there is the option of a custom rom; but quite frankly i'm not decided. I'm actually going to wait for factual data before picking; not pre-sale assumptions.

That's just my point. Samsung's phones have always had some major bug and that bug always takes MONTHS to fix.

And once Samsung pushes the "fix" it rarely fixes the issue that it intended to fix while creating more issues that will require many more months of waiting for another "fix" those issues that will cause even more issues.

That's my experience with Samsung. I think I'll pass until they've proven that they can fix issues in a timely manner without breaking something else while fixing the original issue.

But that's going to be the case with all android phones, The next big thing is always around the corner. By the time kal-el devices come out, they will probably start working on Bruce banner chips that hulk out when you put it on 4g. Or bruce Wayne batman chips that figure out how to override roaming and latch on to sonar frequencies.

Funny story...

Tegra Kal-el (2011), Tegra Wayne (2012 with Batman and Robin variants), Tegra Grey (2012 for Windows Phone), Tegra Logan (2013), and Tegra Stark (2014).

Those are the names of the Tegra SOCs and rumor has it that the Tegra Wayne comes with a bad-ass utility belt.

The Nexus S 4G fix did indeed fix the 4G issue it was having from what I read. Overall signal performance for the other radios, for those who were having issues, was mixed. For the most part the update did seem to fix the major issues; I actually considered the Nexus when I upgraded my Evo simply because it was a stock Google phone, but decided I wanted something with more oomph in the hardware/memory category (that, and the no notification light on the Nexus really bugged me for some reason).

We won't know what issues the ET2 will have until it comes out. We can speculate and guess based on marketing materials, past performance, and reviews of European models, but until the general public is using and abusing their phones we won't find out how "good" it is in the US market. As I said, I hope it does well. It's been hyped to an incredible level, and if it has issues it will only hurt Android. I've already lost my fiance to the fruit camp because of the Epic; I really don't want to see more people decide Android sucks because the be-all, end-all Android superphone loved by the rest of the world turns out to be a lemon in the US.

Oh, and in my opinion, you should not have to root a phone to make it great. If you want to, more power to you, but the majority of phone buyers have zero interest in doing so. If a phone has to be rooted and loaded with a custom ROM to be awesome, then it is a failure.

The initial reviews on the epic touch 4g are positive; with a few complaints related to the size of the device. Naturally it would be good to hear if users have problems with reception but that won't happend for another 4 days. Unlike (for example) evo3d; reviewers are finding call quality very good.

I just switched from an Epic to a Photon, and I am really glad I pulled the trigger. Samsung phones seem to always have the best specs, but real life performance is disappointing. I grew tired of waiting for updates and fixes, and I will never buy another Samsung phone. I can't believe how much faster my browser loads web pages on wifi, 3G, and 4G. Same for emails. I am instantly opening emails now, and my epic would pause on each email a couple of seconds. I realize that this thread is comparing the new Touch4G, but 12 months ago the Epic had the best specs on the market. Oh btw, since this is actually also a telephone:D I may as well mention that the call quality is far superior and signal strength noticeably improved on my Photon. I know the new Epic Touch 4G will be better than the Epic, but I will wait until Samsung's track record improves before spending another dime on their products. Buy the Samsung if you want to tell your friends how your phone has the best specs on the market. Buy the Photon for the positive experience.

Well that's about the same for every phone I've had. (Moment, Hero, EVO, and now this Epic) I mostly use custom ROMs because the UI gets boring after a while (TouchWiz, Sense, etc.) So I change every so often, but I might be keeping TouchWiz 4.0 for a while because it looks pretty cool. I'd change the Photon's WhateverBlur in a second if I got it. No offense but it's one of the worst UI's I've seen besides the Huewai Ascend.

But why shouldn't we compare our phones at their full potential? Why compare 2 phones at 70% when we can see how they really perform?

I have rooted all my phones too (had Synergy SC2 on my OG EVO and now have a Photon that's rooted but guess what I will keep it stock

That is all well and good, but I'll still wait until I see how well samsung actually supports the device. The original epic, didn't receive updates for months. Then whatever update it did get, it made other things about the device buggy. The photon has been out for 6 weeks, and is already on its second update! Htc evo 3d received similar updates upon its release as well. That is support!

Both evo3d and photon had very significant issues on launch. They required the updates. Anyways I'm not sure why you keep bringing the same thing up over and over and over and over and over. We understand that you feel samsung support is poor.

I am neither agreeing nor disagreeing.

The first major update for the Epic came about 2 weeks after it came out, which was to uncap the 3G speed. There was at least one update before that if I can remember correctly. So you're wrong about that.

2nd update? What's the 2nd update?

I can confirm that there were updates fairly shortly after the phone was released. But Froyo didn't come until way after it was originally expected and the official update only got to Epic owners 1 month prior to the EVO getting Gingerbread. None of the support updates fixed the GPS issues.

I know that none of this really applies to you, So-Low Da Don, but people should be aware of the issues so that they can make a valid choice on which device suits them the best.

I actually have to bring the Epic in soon because aside from the GPS issues, the camera will not work anymore. I even hard reset and it still won't work. So, for the secondary line, I may end up trying the SGII out for 30 days.

Couple of things:

First I would love to hear the some factual data on how the antennae/radios perform on the SG2. Can we please leave out the speculation. Speculation is fun but there is so much chatter it is becoming difficult to filter. Yes the old galaxy line had issues (esp with gps). This is well documented. No need to repeat in every comment. What I want to know is if they are fixed in the sg2.

Both phones are plenty fast (though I found the photon a bit sluggish for scrolling playing in the store; perhaps due to motoblur layer or lack of optimization in the graphic layer or increase pixel rate; the evo3d did not seem to have this sluggish behavior).
-
I personally would be more interested in hearing which one has better battery life. I would add what I've heard with regards to processor power consumption but it would fall under the heading of rumor at this point.

The Battery Life in the Photon is AMAZING!!! Best of ANY Android phone I have ever had (HTC EVO, NEXUS S 4G, HTC EVO SHIFT, EVO3D, SAMMY MOMENT, PALM PRE). There was an update last night that helped with WiFi and it seems my Battery Life is even BETTER:-)

I use Mobile Hotspot ALOT (Xoom, 32GB HP Touchpad, Netflix & 3DS) and my battery is INCREDIBLE. Motorola did an AMAZING job with Battery Management on the Photon.

Props to nVidia as well. The Tegra 2, despite being over a year old, has a rather awesome performance-per-watt ratio. The only thing it's missing is NEON but other than having to wait for Skype video calling and having limited HD video codec support, lack of NEON hasn't been a problem. Worldphone capabilities, insane battery life, and Tegra Zone apps/games more than make up for those two limitations.

Are there any US galaxy s 1 phones out there non rooted with gingerbread yet? Seeing as how google is supposed to release ice cream sandwich to those with gingerbread by the end of the year....

Well there's been a lot of stable GB leaks for each version of the SGS, but none official.

I think the battery life is decent, definitely better than the EVO 3D I had. But out of any android phone I had, mine would be the Droid X, then the Fascinate, then the Photon.

So it definitely is one of the better android phones I have used it terms of battery life.
