Photon or Galaxy S2

CAMERA: The Photon has a pretty miserable camera. Maybe with an updated picture taking app it can be improved. I am seriously missing my Touch Diamond camera.

BATTERY: The GSM version of the GS2 seems to get pretty disappointing battery life in reviews. CDMA phones typically eat more battery than their GSM cousins so I'm not keeping my fingers crossed. The Photon, however, easily powers through a day and a half with light gaming, SMS, etc (I can personally attest to this.)

GPS: Great on the Photon. Likely resolved by now as it seems fine on the Droid Charge.

SCREEN: Yeah... the GS2 just wins this one. Super AMOLED Plus is dead sexy 24/7 in terms of sharpness and saturation. Although I will say that the RGBW qHD screen on the Photon is superb even in sunlight. It's tied with the Droid Charge in terms of bright light performance.

I find the camera to be way better than my EVO 4G's for night pics. While my EVO will wash out due to the LED's lighting up, the MoPho handles the LED's better and the pic looks more natural.

No doubt Sammy makes stellar screens. But the MoPho screen, at least to me, is also gorgeous. I don't see any screen door effect, and the screen is sharp with great coloring. Again, comparing to my EVO it is a far better screen, as it should be since it is higher resolution and qHD.

Battery, thus far I'd say it is a little better than the EVO for me. I won't really judge this though for another day or two. These batteries seem to need a conditioning period, as I find they get better after a few days of use and charging and recharging.

Aug 29th...we'll see. I know i'm taking my MoPho back and switching back to the evo until I make my final decision between these two.

I know there's a thread somewhere in this forum about this.

Samsung plans August 29th mobile launch... Galaxy S II finally landing in US? -- Engadget

At least you still have an EVO to go back to. I sold mine a few days ago thinking that the Samsung is be close to being release. That and I was given a very good price for my EVO. Now I may have to buy a used phone to hold me over until the SGII is actually released and before my 30 day ends.

That sucks. Part of why I kept my POS Intercept was that if anything does happen I won't have to worry about it as much.

I do wonder why they would make a huge announcement like that if they are releasing that day. I haven't heard of that done before (that I recall). Not that you'd get me to buy a Samsung right now ;)

Also to note that the title from Engadget is a bit misleading. It's not actually a launch date for the SGII but rather a date in which they will probably announce when the SGII will be release.

Indeed. Kinda upset about that. Especially when they said it would be released towards the end of Aug. Aw well

I'm going to miss the kickstand...

After my experience with my Samsung Epic, particularly with call quality and reliability, GPS, and Bluetooth, I'm perfectly happy "settling" for the Photon. So far, the Photon has been rock solid in all the areas where Samsung is the weakest, and I honestly don't think the SGSII's specs will be enough to warrant giving up the great call quality, GPS, and Bluetooth performance that I'm getting with the Photon.

"Ditto"

My Photon has been rock solid. Everything I run opens instantly, the earpiece and speakerphone are 2ed to none. Reception is the best I've ever had with Sprint. Also, I don't trust Samsung to give me a defect free phone.

Who is "they" and why would you bank on "unconfirmed" information?
And why would that make any sense at all when you knew for sure that the Photon was released on July 31?

It would never make logical sense for a provider to release another "high end" smartphone within a 30 day exchange timeframe from the previous smartphone's release. That's just not good business sense. That would increase the chances of returns within the 30 day exchange/return period, for Sprint.

Once the July 31st release date was announced by Sprint, the earliest possible date that Sprint would consider offering the SG2 was August 30/31 (to be out of the 30 day window for early Photon purchasers). And usually, they give themselves a little lead time for internal training of the "new" smartphone being released, as well.

Look at the timeframes of Sprint's most recent "high end" smartphones:
Nexus S released May 8
47 day gap from Nexus S first release date.
HTC Evo 3D released June 24
37 day gap from EVO 3D first release date. 33 if you count the early order for Premier customers
Motorola Photon 4G released July 31
33 days, for early "premier" purchase, is September 1, 2011. That's a Thursday, which isn't a typical release date (but I have seen it for some phones).

Point is, I don't think it's ever good to upgrade if you're still seriously considering a phone that is already in the pipeline to eventually be released afterwards and knowing you might like it better.

Not saying this is you, but it seems to me that many people purchased the MoPho...never really intending to keep the phone, but find themselves in a bind where they've already sold their previous phone, thinking "illogically" that the SG2 would be released within the 30 day timeframe from when the MoPho was released. That just doesn't make sense, at all.

I think ur comment was probably directed towards me. The other guy still has his Evo. I fully intend to buy and keep my Photon and I didn't intend to sell my evo just yet. Friends wife ask to buy it. Anyway thinking worse case is I just buy $10-$20 phone to hold me over for a week. Now it seems with this announcement that it will be much longer than a week.

I'm betting on a release date somewhere in the second week of September (5-8), especially if the rumors of the new fruit phone's announcement (Sept. 7) are correct.

They would be the president of Samsung Mobile Dept.
Galaxy S II expected to land in the US next month, someday, somewhere -- Engadget
(also stated in the first link posted  )

And I did intend to keep it, but I was let down soooo I'm going to use that 30 day return policy and return it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with doing that. They give you that 30 days to see how you like the phone.

The ONLY things that would make me think about switching to the Sprint GSII (Samsung Epic Touch 4G or whateva silly name they picked) would be a 4.5 inch screen. The second thing would be Sammy's Exynos Chip. I'd love to take that thing for a spin...seems like US GSII's will be sporting Tegra 2's tho.

Taken from FCC listing, the specs seem to indicate a 4.5" LCD...just from the overall dimensions, which are nearly identical to the Sammy Infuse.

Funny, but it was when I heard the SGSII screen might be 4.5" that I started considering other options (and landed squarely on the Photon). I just think that's too big a screen for a phone, where 4.3" is right at the edge for me. The one thing I did like about the Epic was the screen size at 4", which is the sweet spot for me.

The Exynos chip would be interesting, but the Tegra 2 is plenty fast enough for me, and I can share Tegra Zone games with my Asus Transformer. So far, I certainly haven't noticed the Photon being "slow" by any reasonable definition, and so I don't think a faster processor would give me any benefit except maybe the satisfaction of higher benchmark results.

I agree about 4.5" being too big and 4" being the sweet spot. I checked out an infuse... just didn't seem like a pocketable device. 4.3" is a little bigger then I prefer but is very acceptable. I don't really know why that extra .2" on the infuse makes it seem so unweildy to me, but it does.

I thought this was you (whatsitsname) on XDA with the Photon already.

Didn't see "Sprint version" listed anywhere in the article either.

Never said there's anything wrong with it. Just saying, the strategy behind some people's motivation to try it out is a 'bit "flawed."

Put it this way, if I was stil "iffy" about the Photon, but curious enough to try it out...knowing that I could easily end up trading it in for the SGS 2, this is how I personally would approach it (to save time and effort...which in the end, "time=money" as the old adage goes).

1) Wait for the SG2 (Sprint version) to be announced on a "formal" release date.
2) Purchase the Photon within a 30 day period from the official launch of the SG2
3) By the time the SG2 actually comes out, I'll have had a couple weeks of use (standard marketing plan, after a "big" product announcement is around 2-3 weeks of lead-up, prior to release).
4) If by the time the SG2 is released, I've decided that the MoPho is not the phone for me, I just bring it in and exchange it for the SG2.

To me, that just saves time and effort. But again, that's my own personal take on it. And if I was that uncertain about any product, I just couldn't see myself selling away my former phone (especially if I actually like the phone).

Even though I'm not impressed with the Photon's screen quality, I think its probably just as good as the EVO 4G.

I need a phone with good reception, call and speaker quality. That really seems to be the Photon.

I'm running Sense 3 on my EVO and I LOVE the lockscreen and quick setting pull down...hopefully I can find something similar.

I think I'll be jumping on board with the MoPho. The GSII looks great on paper, but specs do not equal real world performance.

Agile Lock for the lockscreen, its in the market.

^I saw that...I also saw the noled app which may make the GSII acceptable. Everybody seems to be reporting the GPS is working properly, and I do like the GSII interface.

I wonder if there will be an app to let the menu/back buttons serve as LED's...

I like a lot about the Motorola, but it seems there is more love for Samsung, and even more for HTC.

Ahh. What to do....wait seems to be the dominant choice...

-----------------------------------------------------------

I had figured on July 31st before heading to the store that I'd be leaning toward returning it AROUND today and at least looking at the SGSII and deciding then. Today I know I'm sticking with Motorola and the Photon. It is just ROCK solid in build quality and the perfect size, weight and feel for me as hadware goes. After a month unprotected in pocket it doesn't have a scratch or smudge on it. The phone has never reset once and every call has gone through perfectly. The speaker is loudest I've ever heard. The call clarity is the best I've experienced on any phone. The signal reception is the strongest I've ever had on any phone. The camera is decent and I've gotten some good shots from it. The video is especially strong, even if "only" 720. Love the HDMI out and the ability to hook up to my big living room TV for "mirror phone" mode to watch movies or gaming. One daughter woudln't be able to give up Riptide GP easily and the 6-year old thinks Angry Birds on a HD bigscreen is too cool for words. Also love the ability to download movies on the phone and then play them easily on the living room tv. I'm sure you can do this on many phones with an HDMI out, but it's nice and easy. Oh..also add the GSM worldphone capability is a hardware plus.

As far as software goes I've grown used to the UI and it's really not as bad a some say. The first thing I did was delete anything bloated, dump all widgets and run off a plain black screen for battery life. I guess this makes it as plain vanilla as possible, but it also means the UI would be the same if I did something similar on Samsung or HTC. LOVE the widget clock mode that becomes available when you take out the kickstand. Perfect for the nightstand and the alarm on the Photon is great. My wife says it's the most pestering/annoying alarm I've had on a phone

Other "toys" or pluses for the MoPho: The car dock and HD station absolutely rock and coudln't imagine life without them now. I took a long trip (18 hours in the car) with the car dock and it just changed the whole experience. We had my phone in the cradle kept to 100% power and running Sprint navigation, music AND web browsing at the same time the whole trip and still INCREASED power till full and stayed there. Played with default music app, Sirus/XM, MOG, Netflix, Spotify, LastFM and Pandora and all worked well through car dock. Added bonus was the ability to run my wife's Pre- on the extra USB and charge her to 100% and keep it there as well WHILE running all the stuff on mine. The car dock totally changes the "in car" experience.

The HD Station is sitting on my desk whenever I need an extra computer. I bought a cheap wireless keyboard/mouse for it and it plugs into an extra monitor I have here. The browsing experience is equal to a netbook, but with a full sized keyboard, monitor and display. You won't be doing massive photoshop projects or intense gaming, but it's fine for web browsing, email and light documents which is fine for me. It's also nice to charge the phone in the dock and not have to worry about balancing the kickstand upside down.

Intangibles that are only a guess: Motorola build quality will mean more longevity over a Samsung phone, Motorola will update more timely than Samsung and especially now with the Google purchase.

So...sticking with the MoPho

With the Photon connected to the big screen, is Riptide being played with the Wii controller as seen is the youtube videos?
